Dumping The Desktop/Laptop For An iPad...

iPad and iPhone to read internet and books in bed, etc. My wife gets iPad upgrades, and then I usually "inherit" her old one.

I need a full laptop for my Linux/vmware installation and to edit photos, though.

What flavor of Linux do you run?

I have Devuan Linux running on an old Dell E7450. Their next version, Excalibur, should be released soon.
I settled on Ubuntu, currently 24.04.3. I'm running it on two machines.

One is a ~10 year old desktop tower machine using an ASUS 5A78L motherboard and a AMD 8120 CPU. I'd rebuilt that machine a couple of times over the years, swapping out motherboards and processors. Some of the components are ~25 years old, but I think the last motherboard upgrade was in ~2015. It originally started life as a Windows XP machine. Later, I loaded Win 7 on it. When Win 7 died and MS was forcing me to switch to Win 10, I repartitioned the drive to add a partition for a Linux OS. I keep the machine because it has a CD/DVD reader and 3 hard drives on it. I've been toying with adding an SSD drive, because I think it will cure the lag time issues. One of the lovely things about Linux is that it is not the resource hog that Windows is. So old hardware is not a no-go.

My new machine is a System 76 Pangolin laptop. It was a bit pricey for my taste, but I needed a laptop, and it is specifically designed to run Linux. It runs like a top.

Don’t know how much you’ve looked into it, but Lightroom is supposed to be really good on the iPad. Of course, the free version is a bit limited, and to unlock the full version, it think it’s at minimum $5 a month.

Affinity Photo is supposed to be a pretty good editor as well. Not sure of the price, but I know a few photogs that use it regularly.

There’s a few other good editors out there as well, and working with an Apple Pencil is a real game changer if you’ve never retouched with a stylus before. I don’t do a lot of traditional editing per’se, but as a designer I do a lot of illustrative and manipulation of images, and I don’t even touch a mouse for weeks at a time, only using a stylus and tablet for work (I’m using Photoshop and Procreate, and working on either a Wacom attached to my laptop, or my iPad)

None of this helps you with running your Linux build, but if you do a lot of editing, I’d definitely recommend trying it on the iPad if you’ve never retouched haven’t already.
