Does anyone know how durable the black coating on the BM axis is, The black looks good but I do not want to buy it if the coating chips and scrapes off and starts looking bad.

BT2 will scratch off easily.A good example is if you are cutting a box and hit a staple with the side of the blade,it will scratch the BT2 off.Mine got scratched up pretty fast.I kinda liked its rugged appearance at first but grew tired of it and removed it.

The B2 coating on all knives will wear off
it all just depends on what you use it on...

Mine is doing good, I mean if you are buying the B2 for its lubrication then dont worry because the B2 coating still works even after its gone.

JUST REMEMBER TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR COATING

I've never been a big fan of coated blades myself. They look cool when new, but I've yet to see a coating that doesn't get scratched up with even light-duty use or even routine handling.

Benchmade _CLAIMS_ that their secret coating actually penetrates the surface of the steel (yeah, right, I'd like to see some lab evidence of this please), and that even after it has visibly worn off, it is still invisibly protecting the blade. Obviously, a deep scratch (such as one might inflict by hitting a staple while cutting a box) would leave unprotected steel exposed.

the coating is almost completely worn off of the tip and around the edge on my axis-lock, but im pretty rough on my knives, ive dug and cut up roots and scraped metal and paint with it.

i kinda like the look of partially worn-off coatings on my knives, it gives them character

The black coating scratches and wears easily. Just from opening and closing the knife the black coating will wear off the sharp edges on the blade.

So is this stuff safe to eat?

BT2 does come off pretty easily, but probably not in quantities great enough to dangerously contaminate food. If your knife goes from new to satin in a single slice and your apple looks dirty, you would have a problem.

I carried a 705SBT for two weeks, then exchanged it for a 705, since I hadn't used the serrated portion at all. After about a week of solid waist-band carry, the coating along the back corner (between the blade surface and the back edge) facing my body was worn neatly along most of the edge.

I agree with most of the above. BM's coating IMO is much less durable than most of the other blade coatings out there. The first(and last) BM I bought with the BT2 coating was the Stryker, it was Totally mangled after 6 months of regular cutting. It looked so ugly that I ended up removing it.

Sincerely,
Adam

Self improvement is a hobby of mine :).

Some time way back a member posted a test where he removed the Black T coating and used it in his normal basis. With routine cleaning and lubing, there was no adverse corrosion or rusting on his M2 blade. Does this mean that the surface of the M2 steel is indeed penetrated with the coating or normal cleaning and lubing is all that is needed regardless of the presence of a coating or not? I think the latter.
