In a recent thread there were some comments made about a older SH II :

http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum18/HTML/000798.html

what caught my eye :

this past one some friends had a coconut and we were gonna use it in a recipe and they needed it opened. so field testing began i got my busse and whack whack with the cutting edge. yeah I knew the back would have worked just fine but I was in a "testing" mood. There were some serious chips in the edge.

I tried this out with an INFI BM and it didn't effect the edge at all. I discussed this with a friend who lives in Malyasia and he was surprised at the damage as he handles cocounts on a regular basis. Some minor rolling as described on the Basics would be not unheard, but actual steel fractures, ie. chipping, is surprising.

Anyway, it is an older SH, 95/96 and I am curious is this the A2 generation and what is the NIB edge geometry - convex or flat? Is this the expected level of durability for a model of such a generation?

By the way, did we every get to see a picture of the new serration pattern that was discussed some time ago?

Cliff,

Where'd you get the coconut?

Naaaaa ....Cliff couldn't find a coconut so used an old Mack diff.

I have a '96 SH and after many, many cuts ...no damage to the blade. I have chopped wood that was well seasoned and gives a full size axe a hard work out.

Just an observation ...if you decide to test and know that this is abuse ....no, won't start that again

In the mid-90's, as was previously mentioned, Jerry used triple tempered and cryo'd A-2....edge geometry was full convex.

This causes me to be surprised at the claims of chipping as well.

The serration pattern has already gone through its first wave of testing and positive comments have already come in from the field...I will be joining the gentleman who is currently testing the pattern this weekend for a second battery of tests...

At trademark approval, a pic of the serrations will be released.

As a result of this thread, I will probably add a coconut to the testing!!!

Andy, thanks for the info, the serration pattern sounds interesting, I look forward to hearing about how it works and seeing a few pictures.

I will probably add a coconut to the testing!!!

I was hoping that it would in fact visibly damage the edge on my BM as I would then have a cheap and easy way to reference blade durability. It unfortunately did nothing at all that I could tell.

Wulf, had one brought in on the Pony Express along with the monthly mail.
