So I stpped by Industrial Firebrick of Detroit to pick up some forge materials, and the guy, Ron, sold me on Duraboard. I'm more used to soft firebricks so, stupidly, I forgot to ask if it needs to be coated in some sort of refractory compound to prevent the fibers from flying around and into my lungs. I don't know if I immediately assumed since the stuff is rigid that it behaved like a firebrick or what.

Do I need to coat it with something?

Most of what i've read on making forges have said they coated duraboard with ITC or similiar. It would probably pay to coat it even if it doesn't specificly require it.

I used insaboard on my forge and didn't coat it with itc-100. I also had the same question. Although now I plan on buying some more to coat it.
