Normally I run the sandpaper across the edge of the sword, last night I figured I'd try running the tip across the sand paper like you would do a knife. Big mistake. I didn't notice that the mouse pad was working its way towards the edge of the work bench with each stroke. Then the sword & the mouse pad & the sandpaper & my hand all went off the edge of the bench. My finger lost the battle. Severed an artery, blood squirting about, 12 stitches & we're just hoping that the piece that was sewn back on has enough blood supply to survive. Sometimes, I'm really stupid...

Holy smokes!...and prayers for your speedy recovery. I've had pretty bad cuts to my fingers (although not nearly as bad as yours probably) and i always hated how they felt as they healed. All tingly and stuff. It definitely could have been worse, so i'm glad the rest of you is ok.

Now since you're in Petaluma, put the steel down until you're 100% and spend your free time at the Lagunitas brewery. I'm very jealous of your location.

Who hasn't done that to one extent or another! You'd think we'd learn, but you'd be wrong. My CAK too gave my index finger a permanent reminder of what NOT to do when "playing with dangerous toys."

I sincerely hope you recover with nothing but a conversation-piece scar to show for it. Perhaps this could start a post with tales of caution (if not Pictures of caution, worth 1,000 words...) by HI users to serve as a reminder to new-comers to the fold. Such a sticky would be an even better deterrent to carelessness than the current sticky we have for knife safety.

hey ugly duck
i had 7 in mine on two fingers were not stupid a little careless maybe but not stupid:D

Gaaah hope it heals well.

At least with really sharp blades the cuts seem to heal better ....as I sit here with a slice in my thumb from blindly deploying a folder while watching TV with my weak hand...heh.

Wife is still laughing at me over that one.

My favorite oops I cut myself story is a friend who was house sitting saw this Klingon bat'leth hanging on the wall. Being a Trekkie, he couldn't resist it, took it down and started dancing around with it.

He never bothered to check if it was actually sharp or not and was lucky to have not lost his hand when it slipped and he caught it slipping through his hand by the blade. Turned out it was totally razor sharp. Trip to the E.R. and having the carpet cleaned and he was all set again ;-).

One of these.

I think I got just a little too nonchalant about the sharp object thing. I've sharpened dozens of blades hundreds of times & got so comfortable that I lost respect. To top it off, my wife's mantra has been "Don't cut yourself!" And of course my reply was always, "Don't worry honey, I know what I'm doing..."

Ten years ago, I am cutting boxes in the warehouse of the retail store I worked at part time. The evening is going fine and then all of a sudden I felt some liquid on the floor. It was blood dripping out below my knee where apparently I sliced myself with the boxcutter!

My boss was nice enough to pay for my car service home, since I refused to go to the hospital for it. Sealed it up with some skin glue and got a nice scar there to remind me to be very very careful with any blade.

You don't really feel a sharp blade cutting you, weird.

Decided to just use large blades for everything now, pay far more attention to them and they are ironically safer to use.

I was teaching her some basic blade safety and how to deploy the CRKT I got her...the one I cut myself with an hour later.

Got a farm knife a couple of weeks ago (sweeet), but there was something that rolled up a bit in the bottom of the sheath. My "thinking" (for lack of a better term) was that if I just held the sheath firm and pushed it down a bit it should flatten out and seat properly.

Knowing the subject of this thread, you good folks know the results ;) . I probably could have used a stitch or two in the little finger, the cut on the next one wasn't too bad. The worst was my embarassment :o . It's about healed up, though. The butterfly dressings work great!

Oh, the sheath DOES seat the knife perfect now, but I also have a thin line of superglue about 3 inches long on the edge side of it, sealing the cut.

Thank you for all the well-wishing, bros. The part of the edge that fell on my finger was the off-the-shelf edge that Bura put on. These things arrive sharp right out of the box. I sure as heck learned my lesson. Maybe this pic will scare somebody else into remaining vigilant on the caution front:

Hey UD, you just nominated for a reference in the Safety thread! I was in an older one for almost cutting my hand off.... Hope you heal quickly and thanks for the safety reminder.

I've got one that bad on the tip of my right trigger finger, I still can't feel it to this day. Can come in handy sometimes when grabbing hot pots and pans...

Goddamn. Ugly Duck has an ugly cut... Hope you're doing alright, live and learn I suppose.
