Yesterday my father was diagnosed with bronchiestasis- inflammation of the bronchi of the lungs- as well as a low-grade pulmonary infection. His doctor recommended a steroid inhaler for the inflammation, but also cautioned that he really needs to treat his lungs right for a while.
Therein lies a problem. He smoked for 45 years (has gone down to maybe 1 smoke a month), and I doubt he's ever used a dust mask consistently in his life. Considering the amount of steel and wood dust he's around daily, that's a problem. He claims that dust masks are hot, and since he's always gone without, he sees no reason to change that. The beard doesn't help much, either.
Are there any good dust/particulate masks that aren't hot to use? There aren't any truly dangerous dusts- pine sawdust, steel filings, occasional paint dusts (including lead)- but the pine is the one that is most common and most pervasive when it is around.
