Dust collection/air quality

Okay, I searched the archives and found a little on dust collection, but not much.

So...

What kind of dust collection and/or air scrubber set-ups are being used by you guys.

My father is a wood-worker and he has a Jet 1100 dust c. and a Jet air scrubber (remote controlled with 4,6, and 8 hour automatic shut-down, very cool). They seem to be very good tools.

The respirator and bucket of water under the Burr King aren't cutting it anymore.

I've also considered just getting something like the Fein or Porter Cable tool vacs (with disposable filters will filter to 1 and 0.2 microns respectively), setting up some duct work, and then hooking the vac up to whichever machine I'm using. I would use a tool actuated switch to keep the vac running a little longer than the tool.

I'm running a Burr-King 960, 6x48 Sander w/12" disc, 9" disc, and Baldor buffer that all are making my shop beg for better dust control.

Any hints, tips, tricks, set-ups, anything would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Nick

Nick,

I use the Jet air scrubber as well and a 2 h.p. two stage vac system. The first dropping point for the large material is a 26 gallon galvinized garbage can. Next the air travels thru a filter and then into the large canvass bag where the air escapes. This catches most of the material that I cut or polish but the belt grinder still kicks some fine metal dust about that just gets swept up when its miller time. Remeber to ground all you metal parts to prevent sparks and miss haps.
Also take a look at Bob Terzuola new book, he has a very fine set up on page 18 where you don't need a system with a bag.

Jeff-

Thank you for the response, I really appreciate it. I was wondering, the Terzuola book you made reference to is "The Tactical Folding Knife" correct? I was going to order that anyway...

Also, I wanted to apologize to the other forum goers as apparently I accidentally searched the wrong archive the other night. I searched again last night and found many posts on dust problems.

Thanks.
Nick
