i work out of my basement for now on knives until i get my shop built my question for you other basement dwellers is how to you keep dust down in your shops,i just changed my furnace filter and it was black from only a week so how do you prevent this i have a dust collector but it is load as hell and SHE hates it i might have to build a well insulated closet around it to keep the noise in so what ideas do you have ,and if you could post pics of your dust collection set ups before i lose my hobby for good!!

thanks in advance,mike

I will post some pics if I remember tonight.

I have a Jet dust collector. It is run to my bandsaw, and my grinder. I have metal ductwork to a 6 gal bucket with a divider down the middle so it doesn't suck up the water. The collector has a pleated filter to get stuff down to 0.5 microns. It is in a closet under the stairway to minimize noise.

I also have a Jet air filtration unit hanging from the ceiling. Good to about 0.3microns I believe. 3 speeds and a 2 or 4 hr timer for when I want to leave it on when I am done.

I also wear a 3M 7500 series half mask respirator with p100 filters on it.

Overall I feel pretty safe. I don't get very much build up of dust on things in the shop. So everything seems to be doing its job.

I'd offer similar advice to that offered about working in an apartment. Since the basement is directly and indirectly connected to the living space, my advice would be move all the really fine dust creating activities (sanding) outdoors. Using files and bench grinders in basement is less of a problem, but depending on the material you grind might constitute a fire hazard. Be very careful with the waste.

You should also check into how this type of activity in the basement may invalidate your homeowners insurance policy. If something happens down there (even if not directly related to your knifemaking), are you giving the insurance company a "get out of paying free" card?

ok i already had the insurance company come and approve my set up, i am for sure going to have to hook up a dust collector down their now every speck of dust in the house is my problem lol

The best advice I got on dust collection is to skip the filter and blow the dust outdoors, it really helps the system flow and I get much better collection. I look out there all the time and do not see any buildup on the surface but when I am grinding wood there is quite a bit of dust. I have made a catch basin for my grinder that I put in place when grinding wood or other material that will generate fine dust, I can direct the entire flow of my system to the basin, this really helps.
