Dust collection or shop ventilation options

I'm working on finishing a new shop and am looking for some dust collection or ventilation options.

My thoughts were to use something like a furnace blower and use that to push the particles outside. There would be ducts under the grinder that would channel it away. Maybe something along the lines of http://www.trendtimes.com/inline-du...9I50AgKz0fC4xCxrkmA5aF60R6hV-6BqrcaApAi8P8HAQ however I don't know if the particles will make for a very short fan life.

I think dust collections would be ok, but feel that they might be loud and require a bit of maintanance so I feel as though venting outside might be the best option.

I'm very open to ideas but would like to budget this out to as cheaply as I can, <$200 for sure.

Thanks for your ideas!

I'm new. Tried loading an image that showed a squirrel cage blower with the motor mounted outside the enclosure. That way dust and metal wouldn't pass through the motor. I'm also thinking of a dust removal system. I googled squirrel cage blowers and found a few.

Thanks, SDR.

I do like the idea of a squirrel cage blower, I didn't know that is what they were called. I looked up a few but I noticed that the prices weren't too great. Usually around 200-300 which would be about the same as a lower end dust collection system.

Let me know if you find one on the cheap :)

People, remember the sparks?
I think if you try a search you will fined a couple of ways you can go. Sure the squirrel cage will be part of the set up but a bit more may be needed.

The bearings in the motor should be sealed and I wouldn't worry about the dust killing the motor.
You do need to think this out. If you are going to run 4-6" conduit to suck the dust and blow it out, You have to make sure nothing plugs or rests inside.

I have started two fires in my shop over the years. I shaped a few Ironwood handles and then started grinding some Damascus.

Big Mistake and made for a few intense moments as I ran for the fire extinguisher. The other time the fire was in the Vacuum!:roll eyes:.

You need to dump out and clean the can each time and don't let wooden shavings build up ether by the grinder.

I know a man here in California that has a 3' fan in the wall at all three of his grinder locations. The fabs just blows the crud out onto the rocks out side of his shop.

Holy cow! Thanks for the warning, Laurence! I feel as though that would have been a great oversight on my end.

I'll need to be very observant of where particulate could accumulate in the system to avoid any risk of fire. Especially if I blow it all outside without a container I could see the possibility of a rogue spark igniting leaves or something on a dry day. Definitely added more for me to consider but I again thank you for the eye opener!
