Dust collection--please help

I have a spend quite a few hours searching and reading old posts on dust removal, but I can’t find my specific situation, since most of them deal with enclosed basements or shops in cold climates. I am in coastal Southern California, and my new shop is half of my 2-car garage. I can leave the garage door open for ventilation all year long. My grinder will be located toward the back of the garage right near a side door that also leads outside and which I always leave open for light and ventilation. Just below and about 18 inches down the wall is a vent at floor level. Here is a photo--the vent is directly behind the red smoker, directly under the band saw.

I was planning on getting the Harbor Freight 1 hp dust remover with 4” ducts (metal or PVC—haven’t gotten that far in the decision yet). It will be on the floor just to the right of my grinder.

So at my grinder I will place the intake of the 4” duct. Then the dust removal unit will be just adjacent on the floor. The outlet duct will go less than 2 feet to the floor vent leading outside. The amount of duct will only be about 2 feet from grinder to dust remover, and another 1-2 feet from dust remover to outside.

Since I can vent directly outside only a few feet away, what else do I need? I don’t necessarily want all the dust just blowing out because the neighbor’s house is close by.

What else do I need in my system? Spark arrestor bucket between the grinder and unit? What should I place outside? Another bucket? How can I switch between metal and micarta/wood dust removal? Is there another answer completely for my setup?

Thank you for your help in designing this. I know this is a safety issue and want to learn from the experience of others.

Thank you Don. If pumping straight outside with a very short run of pipe, is there still a danger of mixing metal with handle materials?

Well, there is always a danger with most everything.
But I've been running dust collectors this way (grinding metal & wood) for 25 years and no problems.

Don that's a incredible system, thanks for posting that's exactly what I need to do!

I picked this one up super cheap not sure to the quality haven't researched it
But it was usa and it looked very well taken care of almost free at a garage sale

Hey HSC do you put a small amount of water in the buckets to reduce particulates going through the vac?
This is and Idea I have thought about basically pipe the air to the bucket but have a little redirecting flap in the bucket to make the air "touch" the water before it's sucked out. Like a wet filter lol

I don't because I don't have the exhaust outlet in the right spot. When I set it up I tried water and the dust collector fan sucked up all the water. I have to reposition the outlet to be from the top. So I need to get new buckets and covers and just haven't been inspired to do so. So I do not use any water in the bottom

Hey HSC

Thank you for posting the pictures. So you are capturing your dust and not venting outside, correct? And, yes, very lucky to live in Encinitas!

Yes I capture the dust into the Penn State dust collector

I also like having one of these up top. Thanks to Ben Greenberg for this tip

Harbeer
