Dust Collection

Hi All,

Just completing our house move and am hoping to get my little workshop set up again. At our new home I have a small one car garage that will have to serve for all my workshop needs. As part of my compromise into one small space I would like to invest in a good dust collection system. The system would be primarily for metal grinding dust. The little bit of wood cutting I do can easily be rolled outside, but i would like to keep the doors closed for the longer grinding sessions. Also, my preference is to not vent directly outside. I do not mind sending the air outside, but would like to collect as much material as I can prior to doing so.

I have read some of Bill Pentz's site, searched the archives, and seen a lot of great home made systems. My question is this; if you were to invest in a ready made off the shelf system what would it be. I won't say cost is not an issue, but I will say that I am willing to invest a decent amount of money into a good system. For the sake of argument lets keep it under $2000 although I am certainly hoping to spend less than that. I am primarily interested in the dust collection aspect as I will also likely get a ceiling mounted air filter as well.

I hope this is not too stupid of a question and i appreciate your input.

Greetings,
You answered your own question. Bill Pentz cyclone. You will never regret the purchase once you have it installed. Mine is a exact copy but rolled out of 18 gauge steel, including all welded pipe. The video below has my dust collector directly behind a 2 hp surface grinder I converted to belt. No dust in my shop after hours of surface grinding.

Best to vent outside.

My thoughts.

Thanks Dennis,

Do you think the plastic construction of the commercial system is an issue? If you vent outside I assume you do not have the filters. How much material actually gets sent outside once it goes through the cyclone system? Thanks again.

Also, anyone have any thoughts on something like the Torit Model 64? I have seen a few used ones for sale.

Greetings,
If you run plastic, it is a must to run a ground wire. I am not 100% sure what is discharged outside. I am in the process of building a Merv 13 filter system so I can run it in the winter. Email Bill Pentz, he answers a lot of questions and is very knowledgeable.
