Does anyon have a desing for a dust collection system that can go under my KMG and won't set the machine on fire?:D

I use an airconditioning vent with a bunch of hard drive magnets around the outside. I've got a bucket of water under that.

Some time check out my shop on my Website and see my setup at one of my grinders. It works for me here. Have a safe day in the shop.

Seriously I use a magnet and a bucket directly under the wheel/platen. I have a 2 stage dust collector that sucks up the rest. I don't use the dust collector for carbon steel because of all the sparks. I do use it for stainless and handle material.
The bucket does catch a ton of dust and metal.

This is connected to my dust collector at the other end of the black flex pipe, and works like a champ. Make sure to put a few inches of water to catch the sparks and dust, and you're good to go - I've never had to empty the dust collector bag, as all the dust and debris ends up in the bucket. I just dump it out every once in a while...

I made a 2 stage dust collector with a small metal garbage can in place of your 5gal bucket. I run metal accordian style dryer hose for the collector and have 2 large magnets in the bucket. I run this under my grinder and grind only carbon steel with no problems at all I do have 6ft of hose before and after the metal can. I have to say that with the magnets in the can I get very little dust in the bags except wood dust from shaping handles. If you are really worried empty the can and collector every night or when finished grinding steel and before if you have any wood dust in it.

Matt and Chuck....you have different versions of the solution that I was thinkig of. I have seen commercial version of that, but with plastic hoses which would work on the intake. I was just thinking of doing it with a cheap plastic cooler so that I could slide most of it up under the bench. I think we can officially call this type of system the "grinder bong":D

EXCELLENT!

We need to make sure that we only refer to them as bongs when we're together, though... to the rest of the world, they must be 'grinding accessories' so they man doesn't come down on us, like, ya know?

Mr purple that is great is right. I have 2 grinders and have just been moving a hose from 1 to the other. A setup like yours with some casters and I will be styling and no fire worries.

The bags I use below my grinder are fire resistant material that helps in reducing the possibilities of catching the bags on fire. But anything is possible when grinding steel. I also like not breathing all the dust that flys off during the process. It makes cleanup easier and quicker. I also use this kind of dust collector on my buffers. Over head in my shop I use a air filtering system that I got from JET. And it works great reducing the air bound materials that are in the air. I know a lot of knife makers that uses this method. One thing I have learn and that is every knife shop is unique in its own way.:D:jerkit:
