Duty Fixed Blade

This is my first thread on this forum, however I have bought a few knives on here.

I carry my Alan Davis knife almost every day for duty as a city patrol office (a D2 steel stone wash 3.5'' folder) but am looking for something to rotate in.

I would love to carry a small fixed blade, possibly in my pocket with part of the handle exposed for drawing. With that, I'm looking for recommendations for Kydex holster makers.

As far as the knives go, I've been looking at Swamp Rat 3 or something a little cheaper. I would love another Alan Davis, but the budget doesn't allow it right now. A tough steel is ideal, I use my duty knives for everything from cutting seat belts to pulling staples off paper :D .

I have measured my pocket and at the deepest point it is just under 7" to the entrance of the pocket.

Any and all recommendations/input are appreciated.

Esee 3 Mil spec would be great. I don't have one yet but I do have several other Esee knives (Izula 5, 6, Junglas). They are tough as heck and are backed up by the best warranty in the business: forever, transferable, no questions asked. The 3 sheath is not kydex but rather molded plastic. Some don't like it but it is actually tougher than kydex in that it is less susceptible to environmental factors such as hot and cold (which kydex is). The sheath is similar to the Esee 6 sheath which I like quite a bit. Anyway, good luck with your search!

I carry an ESSE Izula-ll every day and love it, holds an edge, has never failed me and easy to carry. The Izula is either a half or a quarter inch shorter than the ll. My Izula-ll with the sheath that came with it is 7 1/2 inches.

I just wanted to show you this Rick Lowe pocket-sheath:

He's a forum member too.

edit: he also does kydex I believe.

The Izula 1 or 2 would work as long as you're good with the length of their blades. Your folder will have more blade and cutting edge than either Izula. It's a bit pricier than you want, but the BRKT Necker 1 or 2 will also work for pocket carry. The're in 3V steel so they'll be pretty tough in different situations. At about $165, Bradford Knives' Guardian 3 in M390 is a nice pocket carry. They also do a couple of optional kydex sheaths for an additional charge. Boker Plus does the Krein Pocket Bowie with kydex sheath for under $50. It's in G10 & 440C. It'll be about 5 3/4 " OAL with a 2 1/2" blade.

You know... you might want to see if Alan will do a small FB for you. I've got a drawer full of his small FBs. None of them were over $100.

One of the KaBars designed for police, the TDI I think with the funny angle between handle and blade might be worth a look. The Esee 3 others have mentioned is a great knife,I have the one with a green blade coat and orange G-10 scales and like it very much. The sheath accessories kit in mine has a boot clip plate and Molle clips but there are other stuff available for other options.

Dpx has some great models with a 3.15" blades, also Emerson makes a solid fixed blade

I have both the Bravo Necker II and the Guardian3. They are great and I would highly recommend them in a small fixed blade roll.

Oh, and I have the Izula as well. Also great but smaller. For a duty fixed blade I would look for something slightly bigger.

Check out a Gryphon M-10, 4" blade, with a stealth sheath from SheathPro.

I work with police officers regularly in my job as a firefighter/EMT. Most of the patrol officers I see carry KaBar TDI knives on their duty belts.

A couple people have mentioned the Izula, so I'll throw in a vote for the BK14/24- an Izula handle with the blade of a Becker BK11. It's available in 1095 (14) or D2 (24) and it's a great 3.25 inch blade with a wide variety of handle designs. The factory sheath is garbage though, mine would dull the knife in a couple draws. Lots of people make sheaths for it though, particularly Azwelke and 710 Customs.

ESEE 3 is a very good knife for the money, if you prefer something smaller then I'd suggest a Fallkniven WM-1 (I find the handle very comfortable even though it's such a small knife). Spyderco has a some good compact fixed blades as well: Enuff, Streat Beat and Swick 3 or 4 (the Swicks are tiny). Fred Perrin's Le Bowie (he's got a few others that might fit the bill). Chris Reeve's Professional Soldier (the Insingo blade works very well on this one).

Thanks everyone for the responses!

I think I like the looks of the Necker II the most so far. I might shoot Alan an email and see what he could do. Thanks for the input.

I carried that for a while and, to be honest, I just want something different. It works well for its intended purpose but I'd rather have a knife that will work well for utility as well.

Happy Birthday, by the way. Just got out!

You have me very intrigued with that BK24. Thanks for the suggestion!

I often carry an Izula in my front pocket. Also, the Becker Necker has a 3.25 inch blade and still comes in at 6.75 inches over all. It has a wire breaker and a bottle opener too. Both of these are wonderful and you can get scales for them if you prefer non-skeletonized.

KaBar TDI or push dagger, weak side, behind a magazine or cuff case. If your agency is anything like mine you are taught to secure your pistol with your strong hand during a gun grab. A fixed blade on your weak side enables you to cut at the assailant's forearms, face and brachial areas to facilitate release.

Right, I still have that on my belt, actually behind my belt on weak side next to my mag carrier. I am looking for a fixed blade for utility and to rotate with the Alan Davis that I carry in my strong side pocket.

The DPX HEST in Sleipner steel is the ultimate duty fixed blade IMHO. For either pocket or armor carry. The pry bar keeps the end available to grab in pocket carry. The Steel is as tough as it gets and is more stain resistant than many carbon steels.
