Do you dye the wood scales before glueing them on or after. I am worried about staining the steel.

Thanks

Dyes for wood will have no effect on steel, unless the steel is non-stainless, and the dye is water-based.
I use alcohol and solvent based dyes only.
Some woods can be dyed deeply, and you can work the wood after dyeing, but some woods only dye at a shallow depth, such as maple, and if you do any sanding after glue-up, the dyed layer may be sanded through.
In those cases, redyeing on the knife is required.
