Dying certain colors - How to?

I'm having trouble getting Feibings yellow oil dye to stay yellow on smoothed end grain sanded/burnished edges. It wants to turn brown like an aged oak color which isn't bad if that was the look trying to be obtained. Any thoughts on products/stains that will retain the bright color?

Pictures might help (me anyway) :)

Getting an end grain to match the flats... or even just to the exact color you're after, can be a chore at best, yet (more likely IME) impossible. I have always assumed that's why black edge-kote is so popular.

I just had another sheath made by Paul Long, and it is truly the finest sheath I have ever handled in every respect... but even this sheath is a slightly different color on the perfectly burnished edges than the expertly finished flats. :)

Nick,
Here are some pics. I'm not shooting for exact on this one. Just a little brighter. Don't be too harsh this is my first sheath. I was going for that black and gold (or yellow) look.

Wow, I'm impressed that the edges are nice and flat! It always seems that I have one or two uneven places after I burnish even though they look nice and flat prior. This is a good job for your first sheath!

Mud,
If you mean the bottom, I flattened it all on the belt grinder after beveling the edges to 45 deg.

Any leather benders with some advice? Tandy's has an acrylic paint. Any thoughts?
