Dying sodbuster handle

I'm not a fan of yellow-handled knives. They're an eyesore, and if dropped on the ground they can pretty much disappear in dried grass and leaves. Dying delrin is fairly easy, but results vary (maybe depending on the water used or the actual technique or temperatures).

Go to Goodwill and pick up a cheap saucepan. De-grease the entire knife with your cleaner of choice (be careful though, some solvents may have a negative effect on the delrin). Fill the saucepan about half-full with (distilled?)water and bring it to a low simmer. Add about a tablespoon of Rit dye crystals and stir til dissolved, then reduce heat slightly (to about 180 degrees F). Drop the knife in the water and stir it for 10-15 minutes. Going from yellow to black, I'd suggest dying twice: navy blue the first time, then black. When you're done, rinse the knife and let it dry, then clean and oil the knife as after any submersion.

Or do like I did: haunt ebay til you find one of the older ones with black covers. I think it cost me about $15 delivered.

I used Dylon to turn a Yellow sodbuster Red - sold it on since though so unfortunatly I dont have pics sorry

I think the US equivilant is rit dye - there's been threads on her befor but both work the same way on the stove works best.

You will ofcourse only be able to go darker so yellow is a good start colour to play with - I doubt though there is any true black dye out there though most tend to be very dark purple

I'll toss in an idea due to a personal experience.

As part of a small lot of knives I got a 70's sodbuster that apparently someone used as a soldering iron stand or something. Delrin along both sides was melted along the spine.

Thought about attempting a rehandle, but decided to try something else, I had some "plasti-weld" (I think it was called), a 2 part clay-like epoxy made for plastics, which I molded into the area, allowed to dry, then sanded smooth.

Then I painted the gray colored repair, and a lot of the delrin with testors paint, the tiny jars used for model cars and the like.

Actually worked rather well.

Kadmos, very creative. I am curious did you have a chance to use the knife much after the repair. Just seems like in use the paint begin chipping off pretty quick. Also wondered if anybody has used the "Fusion" paint for plastics.

Of course its just curiousity for me I like sodbusters yellow!

I have heard that all Ferraris are red even when they are a different color, I guess all sodbusters are yellow. :D

I carried it for about 2 months with no issues, eventually passed it off to a friend.

To be clear though, this one was black, and the touch up paint was black.

I think the repair took the paint better than the delrin did, but the delrin held it well for that time I had it.

I did scuff the entire the entire handle real well with a fairly course grit paper before painting.
