Could an experienced collector please comment on the approximate date/era of manufacture and originality of this Buck?
TIA

I'm curious to hear what others more knowledgeable than me have to say, but I think it's a Group five knife (circa 1948-1952) by what it looks like and the markings that have been reported by the seller. I think the rust on the blade can be cleaned up.

While I'm smart enough [just barely] to plug a number into the eBay Search, I'd like to ask if there is a ban on direct links to eBay auctions??? Or any auctions for that matter???

I don't recall reading anything in the Rules when I signed up...

Holy crap!!! This guy never uses one word when fifty will do, does he??? Reminds me of myself...

Why are people asking him what are quite obviously eBay-rule-breaking questions??? "Will you take a set price"; "Will you do a Buy It Now"...??? Can't they read??? :grumpy:

ctrax, directt linking seems forbidden, but enforcement is not consistent.

Thanks, Dave! I'll stop posting the auction links...but I did check the FAQ in the Userbar above, and couldn't find anything pertaining to posting auction links...

Edit: Cougar Allen was nice enough to respond to my question about posting auction links in this thread -

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=391114

From his comment, it is my understanding that we can post a link to an auction as long as we're not promoting it...So, a thread that says, "Hey Mike - here's a knife you are looking for!" would be [technically] off-limits; but if the thread said "Is this a valid tang stamp for the described knife?" with a link to the auction would be OK...

BTW: Here's the Agreement we all read before joining this forum...

I bought the DVD! Great flic! (Get "Secret Window"; another great Depp flic! ;) )

And I certainly fit the description of "... like me"; ask any of my friends!!! :D

Hey El Pollo, if you were really like that, you wouldn't have "friends"! ;) And I figure you got at least one. I got a sticker on my scoot that says it all "F Y. I GOT ENOUGH FRIENDS". Maybe that's why I don't have any :(

Geeezzzz....that e-bay item description is exhausting to read. "No sea mail"??? No pony express. No Roman Legion Runners. Do not run with scissors.

Perhaps that is why we all get along so well here! We're all alike! :D  :D

So Trax.....what exactly are you trying to say here?    :D

Goose.

BTW: You guys might want to keep an eye on that thread that Cougar responded to...It's getting interesting..."Gooseholes In Action", you might say... :D :p ;)

I hate to interupt a great tangent but... :p

That knife is, indeed, from group 5, circa 1948 to 1951. I am assuming it is stamped with a dot on both sides of BUCK, although that was not mentioned in the auction. Nifty looking 108. Hoyt described it as follows in a 40's catalogue:
All-purpose knife. Suitable for small game such as rabbits, coon, possum, and birds. Handy camping. $5.00

I think the bidding is currently at 40 times that price.

Actually, at this moment, it's only 10 times that...but you haven't put your bid in yet, so it may well hit 40 times $5.00... :D

Joe,
I asked the person selling the knife about the number stamp and if you look closely at his response, he indicates there are dots on either side of the Buck stamp. Your confirmation makes me feel good about my ability to determine the date of the knife. Thanks!

#5 above has the link...Basically, Cougar is saying we can link to discuss but not to promote sales... ;)

Is my math really that bad? 10 X $5 = $50 and it is up over $200 but your right, I still have not entered my bid yet! :D ;)

Mike,
I made an assumption that there were dots on either side of the Buck. I really should not ever assume that I have those old knives all figured out though. Not unless I like the taste of shoe! :foot: :foot:

DISREGARD!!! I'm the one looking at another auction...D'Oh!!!

Sorry, Joe, for doubting your arithmetic!!! ;)

Bwahahahahaha!!! I'm a dummy!!! I plugged the wrong auction number into the eBay Search, got a nice looking Buck knife, and I'm bidding on it!!! I want it!!! It's the wrong knife, but who cares??? :D

Joe,
In this case I think you were right on. Although I have to tell you, when someone makes excuses for not being able to put up additional photos, I start to get skeptical. In this case though, I think he was simply photographically challenged. :D
