Eager but Confused Knife Newbbie!!!!

Hi Guys!!!

This is my first posting here! I have only recently become interested in knives as a weapon. My knowledge base is next to ZERO on this as my only knowledge of knives are as table and kitchen implements and cutting tools!!

Fortunately, I see that you live in Manila. Some of the best knife fighting instructors in the world are at your fingertips.

2. Combat/Defence ammo has to penetrate at least 10-12 inches to be "effective". Most "Tactical" knife blades I saw were 3"-4"????????? How can they be used for combat/defence???? You'ld have to shove your whole arm into a man to get to his heart, lungs or liver????

A gun is a stabbing weapon. A short knife is primarily a slashing weapon. You can stab with a knife. The long it is the more effective that will be. But unless it's fully-automatic and belt-fed, there is no sense of slash with a gun.

4. US$ $4,500++ For a knife????? A knife????? A Brand new (52 parts) Colt 1991A1 NRM costs about US$ 800!!!! US$4,500 FOR A KNIFE?????

The peak I've seen paid for a modern knife was $88,000. (That knife was a orgy of fine engraving by Rick Eaton.)

why a Vickers Custom when a Glock will suffice!

Why indeed?

And why a $10,000 Rolex with a diamond at every hour when a $29 Timex will suffice (and probably tell time just as well... maybe better.).

And why a $9800 Visconti when a 98-cent BIC writes just fine and won't leak on you?

Why?

And why am I, as we speak, drinking from a $60 bottle of Balvinie when Scots Royal is $12 a bottle and will get you drunk just as fast?

Well, in the case of the scotch, I'm not trying to get drunk and the Balvinie really is better.

In the case of the pen or the watch, well it's style. It's art.

Knives scare the hell out of me cause they always seemed like very bloody, violent, messy, painful weapons to me.

My instructor has often said, "In a knife fight, you will know what your opponent had for lunch because you will smell it on his breath. That's how close you're gonna be."

A knife is a weapon and a tool, but 99.9% of a knife's use is as a tool.

Exactly... except I'd say 99.9999% of the time.

I believe the reason that alot of the tactical knives are 3"-4", besides the other good points made by others about the knife laws, is the fact that they are easier to conceal than a larger knife. But thats just my opinion.

Welcome to the forums.
I think you may find yourself more at home in the Tactics & Training forum.
Maybe it's just me, but does anybody else think this guy seems a little familure?

I think you guys are underestimating what a 4 inch folder can do. Try slashing steak full force with a nice sharp spydie manix. The kind of damage a slash can do is incredable. Just take a look at the tests they did on that Hidaway knife. They were slashing at beef that was under a layer of denim with a 1 1/4" blade and it was making vicious gashes. I don't know too many people who would continue to fight after having a 6" long 1" deep gash in their gut.

Movies lead people to Beleve that if they get slashed in a fight it will be some kind of little scratch that just trickles blood. Thats not the case at all you get cut good and you're gonna be spurting blood like a faucet. That would have a fairly profound efffect on most people.

A knife is a tool but like an axe some are made with different cutting mediums in mind. Would a hatchet make an effective weopon? Of course. Was it made to be a weapon? No. The same goes with knives. Take for example the Sebenza, it was made for utility work but I wouldn't want to get stuck with one. It wouldn't do as much damge as a Kabar which was designed to be a fighting knife but it would still get the job done. A gun was made to kill and is very effective at that task but it's uses are limited.

A Knife as a backup to a pistol is a good idea. Especialy if it's kept in a spot easyly accesable to your week hand. In the case that the assailent began to graple for your weopon the knife could save the day.

war knives are very short now due to rules by our army to prevent our younger army guys from playing with big knives in slack hours,,,

The army found that boys sitting around, bickering as all army guys do,,,tend to have things get out of hand when they start pulling a 12 inch blade out...

also an arguement between two people will not really get out of hand if the only knife you got is about 3 or 4 inches long....

....but all bets are off in war time,,,then the rules are mostly forgotten,,,,

But knife makers have to work within the rules that are,,,,,and the army has rules against the big knives...

A knife as a weapon! Learn some facts:

My first weapon of choice is the:
Surefire E2D Executive Defender (E2D-BK)
First blind them with a flash light, then your choices are more clear and less deadly. The laws of the land are against using knives, jails can kill you too.

Also the following two books put more light on real life fighting:
