Well my two brothers are getting there eagle scout awards very soon. My family is flying me and bubba -doll out to hawaii for one of my sisters weddings and also another sisters birthday. They are also trying to have my brothers court of honer at the same time that we are over there. I would like to make a knife for each of them to give to them at there court of honer. I need some ideas. I'm going to forge it out and have an assortment of forging stock i can work with. I have some 5160, L6, O1, A2, D2, CPM-3V, S7 and M4. They live in hawaii and i do think they would take care of the knives but what steel would you say would be good. I'm not a big fan of stainless as i do love a nice carbon steel. Any ideas on blade shape and handle material. There being made to be used not sit on a shelf. I do love my 5160 and might use that and fit it with some wrought iron guards. Thanks for all your futre comments. We are heading to hawaii on december 5th so i need to get cracking as i also have my exchange knife to do. Th

Hey Jarod,

Sounds like a great idea. Do you have a sense of what some of their primary uses would be for the blades? Your love for 5160 should probably lead the way. Not highly polished though. Wrought iron fittings sound good...Raymond Richard'esk! :) Where are your brothers at out here? As a rule leather (that isn't used regularly) tends to mold in these parts. I guess if you did a hot wax dip it might inhibit it though.

How long will you be here? What dates? I'll be gone from the 20th through the 30th with my wife's family in CA. Let's get together bro!

I know what you mean about getting hopping on making all the give away blades. My list is pretty long too.

All the best, Phil

You could order two of the small Eagle scout "mothers pins" and inlay them in the stag handles (If you use stag). IIRC they are sterling silver.

great idea stacy. Phil i will be there from december 5 to the 15. My whole family lives there. It would be fun to hook up. Then i can give you your ti that you want. You can also meet bub my girlfriend. I never thought about a sheath. Could i boil the leather in wax to make it mold resistant. Every gets mold it not taken care of :)

JT - to protect your sheaths in a moist environment heat pine tar and bees wax in a 50% 50% mixture and paint it onto your sheaths. Then take a blow drier and heat the sheath so the mixture soaks in. You can get the pine tar from a horse supply store. The pine tar is anti bacterial and is a fungicide. It will darken and stiffen your sheaths and it gives a real nice finish.

I made a knife for my nephew as a gift for earning his Eagle Scout. I checked with his Dad and since he already had a good hunting knife we decided the knife would be a dagger for a letter opener. This way he could use it every day and it would always be on his desk as a reminder of the dedication and commitment necessary to succeed. I had a stag handle that had been carved into an eagle head that I had been saving for years to be used at a time like this and it worked out beautifully. I was asked to present the knife during the ceremony and explain the significance. I was not sure how that was going to play in a church, but it went well and the guests were very interested in seeing the dagger at the reception that followed. As well as making an Eagle Scout very happy, it introduced a few new people to the world of custom knives at the same time.

I finely tracked down my needed handle material, I wanted dyed box elder burl. but it seamed that all the dyed stuff i found was maple burl. I contacted WSSI and they where more then happy to get me what i needed and he told me that he would go through it and hand pick me the best stuff. Now i can't wait to get it, so far i have been very happy with there customer service
