So I thought I'd share a few pictures of my Early Black friday fun purchase. It was too good of a deal to pass up and I had been meaning to try out a Fortis product and ultimately picked up a 14" REV 2 KeyMod handguard rail.

It replaces a 12" Rainier Arms Samson Evolution tube rail. I consider the tube rails from earlier this decade to be a transitional design from quad rails to now key mod and MLOK.

Rail fits directly over a standard barrel nut via fitted cut outs. The Evolution rested on thermal bushings over the nut so I'm wondering if I will get more heat at some weight savings.

I never thought I would own such a long rail but looks like the trend grew on me

It actually has a very thin and minimal profile, yet somewhat reminiscent of quad rails.

Verdict is still pending range trip but so far I'm loving the modern 3-gun look and further weight savings!

thanks for browsing!

I really like the move away from quad rails to Keymod and M-Lok. I've had to run with a rifle with quad rails, and I hated every moment of it. I had to keep a grip on the rifle, but the act of running meant the rails acted like cheese graters for my palms. Not an experience I'd care to repeat. But now we have thinner, lighter, more comfortable options available, which pleases me greatly.

Nice setup. I think I may go for a lightweight AR for my next. I have one of those extra-light stripped lowers that I got for a good price because the maker has a bad habit of making them out of spec, but this one has been checked and should be in spec. Given the reduced weight of the lower, I might go for the whole package of light weight.

Hehe, So MANY options. While I would never have a reason to use one of these rails, I love the fact everyone can modify ARs to their own personal preferences.

I personally have stuck to the old M-16A1 that looks and functions exactly like my old Army issued pal LOL. Even still has the traditional triangular handguards only difference between it and what I was originally issued is I upgraded to an A2 barrel with 1:7 twist instead of 1:14 it originally came with.

Thanks for sharing your experiences guys!

I remember a few years ago when everybody wanted a free float quad rail since its what the military used, and then proceeded to add everything but the kitchen sink to them.

I ran a few classes back with that kind of mindframe only to find that not only was the added weight unpleasant, the sheer number of items was mind boogling and confusing when running a course for someone who does this as a hobby.

Going forward, lightweight and minimalism is the way to go.

Please share some of your builds with me too.

always been more of an AK guy myself....

3x VEPR 7.62x39s...pick a color, any color...

VEPR 308

Shorty for use as my current " truck gun " .....7.62x39

I have just over 20 AK varients....I really like the stupid simplicity of the design.

Impressive ak builds.

Any functional and accuracy improvements with these?

I always had the impression AK work best As designsd

Mine's pretty standard, but I like it. Yankee Hill Machine lower receiver, Palmetto State Armory upper with a 16 inch M4 profile barrel with M4 feed ramps. The lower is their standard MOE lower parts kit that I assembled myself. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure I ever loc-tited the castle nut for the buffer tube.

Furniture is all Magpul, MOE stock, MOE grip, MOE handguard, and MBUS rear sight. Flash suppressor is an AAC Blackout without the quick disconnect for sound suppressors. I bought the handguard from someone else, and who had painted it. It's a sort of diamond pattern of tans. He sold it to me with two rails with low-profile ladder covers. I also have as you can see the Magpul angled foregrip. I like it, though I am considering trying out one of the smaller versions.

Simple and to the point!

The magpul afgs add a considerable amount of weight imo, I may try the keynod fingerstops by arisaka down the road

Nice guns everyone. Love the VEPR 308 and the other AKs, especially the OD one. Those are the most "my style" on this thread so far.

Thanks for once again confirming that I would be 100% broke if I went and got my Class A LTC. Let's see, skiing, synthesizers, snakes, and of course steel...ya I think I have enough expensive hobbies for now :D

Killa set up. I got Key mod on my Tavor...

Ive been thinking of converting my Windham ME build Bushmaster to key mod, but I would have re-duracoat the hand guard...

I might just build a new AR and keep my current build complete. I have replace almost every single part of that AR... it would be wrong to change it around now.

FYI I have since removed my angled forward grip in favor of a short standard grip. I find I am able to "pull" the rifle in tighter with a mini handguard grip. The angle forward grips are sooooo 2012... Its 2015, no one uses them anymore lol.:D

I love the AK's! VEPR makes great Russian made weapons. I still think the Chinese type 56 is the superior AK design. It has a 1.5mm receiver instead of the standard AKM 1mm. Its as strong as a milled gun but it doesn't weight as much. It also uses milled AK components like the sights , gas tube, and heavy barrel. Norinco and Poly Tech are #1 IMHO.

Oooh I love that Tavor GB!! Nice ESEE-3 as well. I have a few in that line, but not the 3.

More pics of guns please!

I would peen or steak your buffer tube castle nut instead of using Loctite. There should be recesses on the back side to peen the back plate to the castle nut. Nice set up, they don't need to have all the bells and whistles. Just good quality components.

It does have the recesses. I just didn't have a good way of doing it when I put it together. My brother now has a wrench for it, so I'll have to borrow his.

At some point I do plan on adding an optic to my AR. I'd love to put one a Meprolight reflex sight on it. I had a look through one at a gunsmith's workshop once and it was a very fast sight to look through, and it was bright and visible both in his dimly lit garage and outside in bright sunlight without any batteries needed. I like the idea of a fast and accurate sight.

I have a Meprolight RDS I originally put on my Tavor because they are both Israeli designs. I found the ACOG worked better on the Tavor so I put the RDS on the AR. I highly recommend the RDS for its simplicity and toughness. It only has 4 settings High, Med, Low, and Night Vision. It doesn't have 15 settings that just confuse things. Its battle tested and in service. It also has a cool auto on off feature with a motion sensor built in. Throw a magnifier behind it for long range or clip NV behind it for night time use.
