Early Black Friday Fortis Keymod upgrade

Nice. I like those new KeyMod handguards. A friend has a BCM KMR that I helped him pick out. Felt really good in hand. If I ever grab another AR I'll probably set it up with a KeyMod.

nowadays they are using special inks and dyes in the printing process instead of a coating. In theory they're more durable and more effective. I didn't know that the BDU had any kind of coating, because I've seen BDU tested through NVGs and it tends to do poorly. The whole pattern turns bright white under NVGs in the tests I've seen. And older NVGs worked in the Near-Infrared Band (NIR), but now Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) is becoming more common, and it's harder to camouflage in SWIR. I've used satellite imagery that went from visible band all the way past SWIR in geography projects, and it's very useful stuff for distinguishing between things that look identical in the visual band. Back in the 70s we figured out an equation for distinguishing between different crops and between healthy and unhealthy crops that allowed us to predict grain yields accurately in the Soviet Union years in advance. We'd then use grain imports as a bargaining chip because we knew what they would need before they did.

Truely interesting article Thanks for including it. Yes, BDUs originally supposedly had a coating they were dipped in to make them less visible in IR and mildly better for thermal imaging in addition to the dye choices they made were supposed to cut down and make you less visible too. Less is a variable though and you still glow like a candle because of your face :D And it was very susceptible to starch and irons. We were not allowed to iron OR have our BDUs dry cleaned because of it. Most of us still had our Khakis and ODG/Jungle Fatigues that we wore to formation because they were supposed to be ironed and if our BDUs were wrinkly we would get a gig, but we weren't supposed to iron them LOL. Later the guys that came in when BDUs were all that were issued, and the Fatigues and Khakis were obsoleted, we would have one set that were ironed for formation and leave the rest for field use. Sort of like the boots, never wear your spit-shined formation boots to the field or they will never pass another inspection again LoL. :D I hear the new ACUs and their boots you just dust em off and put them on the next day no pressing or shining allowed. What do soldiers DO with all that time they aren't prepping uniforms for formation now??

Multi and hyperspectral imagery can do a lot of amazing stuff.

Oh and I ordered a set of the pyramidal sights. I won't be able to install them for a few weeks, but I'll let y'all know what I think of them.

The KMR is on my to buy list for my next build. Even though I am not a BCM fan, their KMR product looks solid and one of the best ones at the moment.

I am considering the Alpha KMR, 100 dollars less at cost of an extra 2.2 ounces maybe worth it.

Trying to build an as light as practically possible irons only AR15 next.

I'm so tempted to spring for some KeyMods. But the rails on my AR work fine, even if they are a bit bulky. Then there's the whole issue of the front sight being integrated into the rail.

Maybe I'll just run with what I already have. That's what got me in trouble in the first place, buying whatever caught my eye.

Whats your current setup?

Integrated sights...I'm thinking Troy?

I actually miss my Evolution tube rail because the round shape fits my hand better than the squarish Fortis. However, don't let that practical aspect get in the way of AR fashion!

I use Troy back up iron sights on most of my defensive/offensive guns. They make the best BUIS IMHO.

I have a URX II with KAC Micro rear irons. Magpul MOE grip and CTR stock. Topped off with an Aimpoint M4s.

I really need to get a good picture of that gun. It would've been much easier to just post a picture...lol.

Found an old one. I've changed a couple things, added an AAC Blackout flash hider and an enhanced trigger guard, but she's pretty much the same. Using the KAC ribbed panels too. I like them better than the XTMs.

Looks great!

Aimpoint on top?

I can answer than for him lol... Yes that's a Comp M4. Very rugged sight with a huge battery life. Very very expensive. I think they went for close to $900 when they first came out. I see them now for under $800 at various stores.

Added a Arisaka defense finger stop. Nice, light weight, subtle and useful addition.

Hmm, not sure if I would ever see a need for a finger stop for the way I shoot. Now if that hollow end fit over a nice bipod mod. That would make it useful in another couple of ways too. :)

Just curious christcl, how much help does it provide? what does it do for you?

Hi Shavru,

I've been practicing more shooting standing and with a far forward grip.

The finger stop helps me with consistency in where I am gripping, similar to a nocking point on a bow string.

Also acts as a reference point to where my gas block is since the rail slots are rather large.

It also doesn't add much weight compared to a clunky vertical or angled grip

good to know :) makes sense with that long a rail. With my particular grip, it probably wouldn't help me much, so I was curious, but now I understand. Cool, always amazes me the little things that can be so helpful for fixing the details that make consistency a standard :D

Thanks!

It's a neat little "control" accessory.

For sure basic shooting skills and strong fundamentals are still required.

I never thought I'd ever use a rail this long but it's growing on me!
