I am always on the lookout for these early production models in white melamine. Do any of you have one or more of these? They were found to crack if dropped in extremely cold temperatures and Buck discontinued the use of the white melamine handles.

Larry,

I thought i would let you know of a special knife i saw that fits your descripton. Last night, while at Chuck's house, i was looking at a few knives in his collection. He does not keep a lot of knives but this one was special from a historical standpoint and a collector. The knife was white melamine and a barrel nut with thick leather washers. That is how they were made in 1961. The interesting thing was that the knife had the old electric pencil stamping. It did not say Buck though, it said Ida, which was the late Al Buck's wife. He obviously made it for hie wife. It is the first barrel nut i have ever seen with the electric pencil stamp. It either tells us that he used that stamp up unitl incorporation or it only means that he still had the pencil at that time and it was the only way to put his wifes name on a knife.

FYI

Joe,
I would definitely agree that he used the electric pencil to add her name because he did not have a stamp with her name.
Did you know that the white melamine knives come in bbl nut models with hard fiber spacers as well as the leather? Also, the white melamine also exist in flat tang configuration although I do not have any of these. All four of my knives are barrel nut models. What model is this knife?

Larry,
The knife was a sort of kitchen knife. I found, (coincidentally) another one today in the back room. It has a black phenolic handle. I am begining to think Al used that pencil into the first part of 1961. We will see if i can come up with more evidence to that fact.

Larry,
The knife has the electric pencil stamp. The strange thing is it has bone hard fibre spacers. I am begining to think that maybe he had some left over, aleady stamped with the pencil, kitchen knives that he finished up in 1961 and or 1962. It is common to find these kitchen knives with the pencil stamp in lignum vitae.

Take care,
