About once weekly I am going to try and post some of the Randall Lore that exists. I hope you enjoy them. And those of you that do not belong to the Randall Knife Society maybe you will join, for more Randall Lore. http://www.randallknifesociety.com. This particular piece was in RKS newsletter #41, February 1999.

We will call this one Randall Lore #001

Until the early 1960's Randall did not mark their stainless knives any different from regular production. Therefore any knife you see with an "S" was made after 1960.

Gary Randall says, "the first "S" marked knives were sort of an experiment. We welded the letter S on the end of a rod and then stamped the blade while it was red hot. Being very careful not to stamp the blade too deep. Then we would stamp the Randall logo. As a matter of fact, on the very first ones, we used two S's (SS), but that did not last long. We used the single low "S" method less than a year and then moved the "S" up by the Randall logo. Later on (about mid 1960's) we had stamps made with an "S" beside the logo as you know it today". /// Best Regards, Rhett Stidham

This would be a great fashion by which the novice and experienced alike could learn...kinda like a chatroom FAQ

Keep 'em coming.

I think that is a great idea. While I don't own a Randall, my dad has a couple that he got in the early 70's; a model 21 and a model 5 (I believe). I have the fever to get a Randall and find any additional info greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mark
