Earth day, birthday, mirth day and the mystery guest

Rupestris - when we first arrived at the scene it was raining out, so we decided to set up a tarp between the vehicles to get the friction fire training, that is why we ended up doing it in the parking lot. Admittedly, it would have made the photo scenery a bit better to do it in the woods, but the goal was training first. Doc makes a good point, that the hardest part of getting your first friction fire is overcoming your lack of confidence. Might as well get your fire first under the best possible conditions and then work your way into more difficult situations later.

I think he saved me a years worth of experimentation by showing me all the little tricks right off the back. Things like how to lock your wrist at the head piece and locking your arm using your leg. All great stuff! Now I just need to do this a bunch of times on my own.

Wow, you got some great pictures, Ken.

BTW, Ken also learned how to make 2 and 3 ply cordage with Wood Nettle (Laportea canadensis). Forgot to take pictures, though. :(

Doc

Also, the hand drills were Teasel (Dipsacus sylvestris).

Hey Mis, is it really your birthday? If it is, Happy Birthday bro. Is it really...........

Doc

Yep, really was. Now if you go back and read my enthusiastic response to the "What's Up Doc" thread it will make more sense!

But let's keep this focused on your pics...man, you guys got some great shots of the firemaking process, that is really good. As a guy who hasn't got a whole lot of friction-fire time in those are quite helpful and interesting to me.

Funny that we share a birthday, eh? Cheers Doc!

Mis, first of all, I want to wish you a very Happy (tho' belated :o) Birthday. I won't miss it next year!!!! (BTW it's not shown in the BF calendar).

Mis, having a birthday on Earth Day for people like us is just too cool. Sharing it with a couple of buds, like Phil and Ken just made it that much better. What would be cool in spades, is if, some Earth Day, we (you and I) get to share it together. I'll have to put it on my 'Bucket List'.

Cheers, bro.

Well, I was excited at the discovery that we share a birthday!

One of these years I will be in your half of the country around Earth Day and we'll do just that...it would be a pleasure captain!
