Earthquake! Grab your Beckers!

We just experienced an earthquake here in SC! It was only minor, 4.1-4.4 magnitude, but nonetheless, it was an experience! So in the event of a catastrophic earthquake, what Becker would you bring to help you survive?

All of them, as they are currently stacked in one backpack...you're gonna need choppers, so the 4 & 9; general utility, 12, 15 & 16....a good camp knife: the 5....and the one knife that will withstand accidental irradiation; the BK2. And my 13 and 11, which is hanging around my neck right now. I mean, I have beers that need opening.

Glad that it was only minor. I wouldn't like to experience a major one.

I felt that rascal over here in NE GA !! I was in the basement and all of a sudden I felt the floor "moving" ,then something caught my attention and I noticed that my fishing rods, which were in a rack, were shaking big time !!! At the time I wasn't thinking about needing one of my Beckers, but a roll of Charmin did come to mind.

I have experienced several magnitude 7 quakes here in California. One of them claimed the life of my former secretary. She lived on the ground floor of an apartment building that collapsed. A big earth quake is the most likely natural disaster that I will face and choosing a single Becker is difficult. Until a week ago I would have picked my Becker 9. However, I bought a Becker BK-7 last week and I really like it. A little shorter and more nimble than the BK9. Now, if you let me have two Beckers, it would be the BK-9 for heavy duty chores and a BK-16 for the lighter work.

To answer the question...

Great!! Now you have me concerned about possibly having to choose 1 Becker blade...

I'm now going to find a roll-up holder that will fit ALL my Beckers so the next time I'm asked 'WHICH ONE', I can honestly say ALL of them. :)

Edit*
I would have to look up the biggest one I've been in. Probably somewhere around 7 or so. Having lived in AK for 9 years, earthquakes were pretty common. Sometimes you'd wake up, sometimes not. lol

Edit#2 - Looks like 7.8 in 1987 and 7.7 in 1988

I was in a 7.1 earthquake in San Francisco in 1989. It was scary. The city was really messed up. Giant buildings laying on their sides crushing lines of cars in the streets. Cracked open streets with cars down in it. Fires, smoke and endless sirens in a blacked out city. I had no electricity or water for weeks in my house. All the stores were closed. I survived out of the red cross tents for weeks. Normally my go to Becker is a BK9 but in a huge urban disaster like an earthquake I would chose a BK3.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear about that. California is one of the places that first comes to mind when the topic of earthquakes arises. As I only have a BK-9 and 11, I would have to go with the 9 overall. I am currently debating on which 'tweener to purchase.

I spent a few years in SC low country, an earthquake was the last thing I would have guessed as far as natural disasters go. Glad it was a little one, the buildings and such are designed for floods and wind not quakes.
To answer your original question, I'd grab the Machax and lash it to my pack and go. The pack already has a Becker or two inside the kit, win win.

Earthquakes are the reason I always carry my 14 and my Leatherman Wave. I also carry my 2 in my camera bag/daypack when I travel around. Since the big earthquake/tsunami here on March 11, 2011 I've carried them almost everywhere I go. I also keep my 9 very easily accessible at home so I can quickly grab it if the need comes.

Yeah we felt that one out here in Lexington too. Definitely a BK 9 for me.

There have been 3 or 4 tremors here that I can remember. Last one was in 2011.

I think the biggest one recorded in the state was in Summerville.

4.1? That's cute. :D

Oct 17, 1989. Day before my 8th birthday. I was with family in Redwood City at Malibu Grand Prix. I remember the general "WTF?!" reaction on all the adults. We lived in the northern peninsula in a condo, no electricity or heat, but the adults did a good job of keeping the kids at ease by making it seem like a camping trip. We even pitched tents and sleeping bags in the living room.

Of all the Beckers, I think I'd be most comfortable with a 9. I always have a Leatherman with me (Charge TTi) to cover the small stuff. I have been using a Kabar Combat kukri for the past year and sold my 9, but after a year of use I feel a little more comfortable with Becker tangs in a SHTF situation (if they made the combat kukri 1-1.5" longer, and had a more substantial Becker like tang, I'd be all over it).
