in India was felt as far away as Nepal (CNN).
I know that Pala must have been traveling if he is expected on Jan 28. Hope his plans, his safety and that of all at Birghorka are unaffected by this catastrophe!

I've been following the quake. When I say 7.9 and the death estimate of 1000 I told Yangdu it would be at least 10 times that -- and it may be more like 15 or 20. I forget that many of the buildings in that area are ready to fall down on their own let alone stand up to a 7.9 earthquake. I feel for those poor souls. It ain't gonna be easy.

I haven't been on CNN, but have been following the news on the local channels.
Uncle Bill the first thing I thought of was what you said about the buildings in Nepal and also knew it was going to be worse than what's being reported.
Then since being on the forum here I have thought about all the places similar to Nepal and India and have been noticeing that it's always much worse anywhere that earthquakes occur than what's first thought.

It is very sad.

Yvsa.

My local affiliate of FOX network said that the estimates were now about 13,000 dead. This was at 6 am PST.

From what I've seen of the film/video footage, even while a building is being cleared, it is still collapsing as the machines haul stuff away.

Makes me very glad that I am living here, no matter what I may think of people, politics, or society in general. I pray for everyone that is suffering, but I also offer prayers of thanks for what I have.

Nepal felt the quake but that's about it - too far from epicenter. Everybody and everything okay at BirGorkha -- business as usual playing catch up.

I see death toll estimates are now at 20,000, a far cry from the original 1,000. Lots of grief and misery going on in West India.

Mohd's link to yesterday's CNN story put official estimates at 23,000 dead, but one official said that those figures could skyrocket to 100,000 if as estimated, 80/90 of 3 cities population was indoors when the quake hit. Army and Police having to escort relief columns.

Local newscasters have already stated that official sources (whatever that means) now estimate that the death toll will be well over 100,000 people.

Lots of miracles (with God's help) occurring, like entire families being found. But the interviews I have seen state that much of the newer high rise buildings were being put up without much thought of "codes" because of the rising "silicon valley" industry and cocurrent increase of upper middle class needing new homes.

With so many dead, it will be interesting to see if anyone gets blamed for the substandard housing. You can't litigate if the person isn't alive.

Pakcik Bill & Fellow Forumites --- While we talk about Khukuris, I guess most of us are praying for those earthquake victims in Gujarat, India ...

More news: http://www.cnn.com/

I just sent my eldest son to East of Java to further his study ... and Merapi, one of the still active volcano in Java is also showing his anger! If it erupt it might caused disaster to Jogjakarta one of the highly populated city in Java ... so I just told my son
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">"Trust in Allaah! I hope your school wich is situated quite far from Merapi wouldn't be affected by the eruption ... insyaa-Allaah you will be safe there! Afterall ... nobody can control those type of natural fenomena ... not a weakling like me ... not even the most powerfull person in this world. We are all very small in front of Allaah! We just have to trust Him and keep on praying and praying and praying! When Allaah accept our pray ... nothing can do harm to us!"</font>

The irony is ... while we sympathize those victims of natural fenomena ... give aids to them ... in the meantime some highly civilised people among us are misusing their power by initiating murder and killing on this earth for the namesake of political survival!

You have alot of wisdom Mohd---good advice! We all must remain alert to the world around us--knowing that there are dangers we can guard against---and others we cannot.--but prayer IS powerful.

I didn't see anything more on the news about survivors disrupting reestablishment of order and relief convoys today though. I hope things go well, but I also fear that people can take just so much and too many of these folks there may already have passed thatpoint. It would be terrible if civil disorder, famine, and lack of water and shelter caused the death toll for those not trapped in the quake to get anywhere near those killed by the quake.

And then some contemptible criminally cretinous governmental official over there who claims to be Christian starts yelling that the earthquake was God's punishment to the Hindus.

( Written, deleted, rewritten and again deleted seversl times however sanity returned prior to posting any of them. )

And Mohd, there are those who suffer abuse in silence for they have no where to turn, those neglected because none will listen, and those exploited so some can reap power and money.
