Easiest way to make a knife with few tools?

If you haven't done much work with hand tools, it can be very satisfying. I took two bread knives from a 36 grit to 800 (almost mirror polish) in only a few hours last night. It is really fun to watch something go from so rough to nice. Hand tools are great, I highly recommend them.

I did the same with a 7 1/4 inch blade last week, up to 600. What a pain in the neck. Didn't have a 150 or 220 belt, only 220-400-600 sandpaper. Took me longer then a few hours, tho, to get rid of the deep 80 grit scratches.
And thinking I'll have to do it again after the heat treat:jerkit:

The key is to start with a rougher grit like 150 before the 220, 400, and 600.

It sounds like you were working with what you had, I understand that!
