Well, this is blade number 4, though only the second knife completed-

My son is 4, and a bit knife crazy about cutting fruits and veggies and "working with Da", so I've made this one for him. I'm sick of throwing away the plastic ones. The tang is drilled for pins so that I can put scales on when he gets a bit bigger, and I can always regrind the point a bit later. Overall length is 5.75 inches, it's an old saw blade as stock, so I cheated a bit and the filework is from the saw's tooth pattern :D

I'll finish the sheath tonight, but it's a very simple one, he's not allowed to carry it on his belt or have it in his drawer or anything yet, so mommy and da hold onto it up on the knife rack.

That and a chocolate bunny and he'll have a nice easter.

This is one that's getting closer, the seax blade. The handle doesn't quite match the type, but I'm playing with it:

haha i remember those days when i used to help my dad cut lettuce and celery with fake plastic knives:p

now that was cool. i wish my grandpa had made me a knife like that when i was a kid. hes going to love it. you should still keep the bandages handy just incase. HEHEHE!!! good job.

Well, I took my time on it, hand finished from 150 to 1500 - and because I was still dumb when I was heat treating this one it never got finished beyond file work before tempering. So that took a while.

But yeah, he's going to cut himself. I *know* he's going to cut himself. I designed a shape he shouldn't run himself through with, but it's either got to be sharp or dull, and I figure sharp is safer.

Good on you Koyote! This is a great gesture and something he'll really appreciate. If I were you though I'd never regrind it. When he gets old enough to have "more knife", make him another. Keep this first knife as it is. He'll thank you for it later in life.
