I like mineral oil for my Beckers. I ran out this summer and was keeping an eye out for some more. While getting dragged around Bed Bath and Beyond Boring one day looking for a wedding present I stumbled on something interesting.

A thing of mineral oil wipes. Says food safe right on the package. $5 for a pack of 30. You can take one out, lube some knives and put it in a baggie and save to reuse. Real easy to take one or two wipes, put them in a zip lock, throw them in my pack and they will last my whole fishing/camping trip. I have gone through about 10 in the last 4 months.

Safe, convenient, effective and easy way to keep your Beckers rust free for about $5 a year. (Unless your name is Guyon or Bladite - It probably gets expensive by the truckload :D)

I also use vegetable oil and oliv oil but having wipes would be convienient

By the way Mauser that leather book is awesome!

I manage a grocery store Mauser, and I do essentially the same thing. I take 100% cotton rags, cut them into 6x6 squares, and soak them in our meat depts food grade lube. Ill throw a couple in a ziplock, and I stash them everywhere I normally frequent. I keep them in my truck, the office, my packs, everywhere.

Never come across these before...What is mineral oil anyway? I use Fluid film on most of my knives and olive oil on my food ones even though Fluid film is suposedly "food safe" I still dont trust it.

I'm glad you guys like the tip, I hope some of you can put it to good use.

Well, I never thought about exactly what it was before other than a food safe oil. My mom used to always keep some in her kitchen for her butcher knives and for wiping down old wooden bowls and cutting boards after washing them. Its clear and has no odor or taste and it wont go rancid like vegetable oil can.

So I just googled what it was.( Never heard of film oil before, I looked that up as well. Sounds like good stuff too.)

"Mineral oil (also known as white mineral oil) is used in the food world for stuff like covering gummy bears so they don’t stick together, providing a nonstick coating for baked goods, and adding a protective layer to raw fruits and vegetables. Around the house, it’s most commonly used to oil cutting boards so they don’t crack, and is sometimes used as a laxative.

It is a petroleum product that starts life as crude oil, which is then hyperrefined to remove any odor, color, or taste. White mineral oil is classified as either food grade or technical grade. The differences between the two include things like the level of refinement, handling procedures, and meeting certain test requirements set out by the U.S. Pharmacopeia.

“When you say that [it’s a petroleum product] people are like, ‘Oh my God,’” says David Glickman, the owner of the Vermont Butcher Block and Board Company. But he says it’s the best oil to use on cutting boards because it imparts no odor and won’t go rancid like vegetable oils will"

Great Find, BM. Mineral Oil is what I use too. I use it on my stones too (to clarify-i meant my sharpening stones:D). How saturated are these wipes? would there be enough in/on a wipe to lube a stone in order to sharpen?

Interesting...Thanks for the info man. After reading this I checked out what mineral oil was on images and noticed several pics of baby oil although for me, going into a store and buying baby oil just doesen't seem right...

baby oil might be scented, and THAT would be a wrongness on your blades....

"hey, have you seen Junior? OH MY GOD, WHY DOES YOUR MACHETE SMELL LIKE JUNIOR???"

They are very wet, I think they would work for that. They leave excess oil on the knives and my hands that have to be wiped off.
