Hi guys,

I had a wood shop teacher at the school I work at try to do this up for me. He used devo blades, but the whole thing is a mess and nothing is square. Is there an easy way to get the shoulders/middle strip square so I can glue on the maple blocks?

Files, a file guide and draw filing technique...

At this point a very sharp wood chisel, you can see the shoulder is at an angle. May need to recut the maple, looks a little rounded.

Use a router very gently to square up that angle and then clean up carefully with a chisel

A router or a mill would be dead straight, but a good file well applied will do the same.

Both of the above suggestions were dead on. This is the best way to do this, this is the way that carpenters make mortise and tenon joints. Router and chisel. At bottom is an example of this. Looks a lot like a tenon joint.

This is good if you don't have a router. Bladesmiths use this method to square the shape for the tang on the finger guard on many knives they make after they drill a series of holes through them. A Using a file guide with the file is the cleanest way to do this. Otherwise patience is the key.
