Mike,

MTF3 is right:Someone had to report you to E-Bay for them to notice.

They rely on Ebay Nazi's to report stuff, They cannot patrol 14,000,000 items themselves, except for some keywords in descriptions etc.

Someone reported your items that knew the rules about linking to another site,Ebay didn't go to 1SKS and check you out, they don't have time! They are 'self policing' using members input.

Frankly Mike, I think you over reacted. If Ebay has certain rules we all have to respect that. Perhaps they should have given you a chance to remove the link before deleting your auctions.

I've posted a related thread over in the AKTI forum about this. As I was posting it, I saw (behold!) a banner ad for Ebay on screen.

I can understand why Ebay can't afford to let people sell politically incorrect knives on their site. But a policy against even linking to a site that sells politically incorrect knives seems a bit extreme. Or did the 1SKS link have the word "switchblade" visible on Ebay's page?

Of course we knife-enlightened people all know that the general public's switchblade hysteria is a crock of fertilizer! But then I know that a solid majority of the public are dead wrong on a whole bunch of issues!

eBay's software does look for key words and brings those up for review. For example, there was an auction some time ago for a "butterfly knife" which turned out to be a small figural knife in the shape of a butterfly, not a balisong at all. So, auctions are not automatically terminated based on key words, but simply brought up for review. If the auction completed before the manual review process can get to it, then that one slips through. This is why some get axed the first day while others go to completion. The trick is not to use the key words. Don't list "Benchmade 42 Butterfly Balisong knife." List "Benchmade 42 folding pocket knife." Those of us who are interested in it know what it is.

There was no mention of auto, butterfly or switchblade in any of the auctions. And I understand about the Ebay police looking out for sites that sell the extremely offending merchandise we call autos and bali-song.

I also understand that they have their rules but there is no warning or anything. The last time they deleted our auctions I got NO response as to why and to date have sent them 6 emails and no response. Oh well...

Since I do have my own server and 40 web sites running right now I guess I can open a new account on a site with no prohibited knives.

Mike, did you know they actually allowed a ballistic knife to be sold?

Anyhow, I don't buy knives on ebay. The best place is this forum.

with us. Unfortunately your auctions were in violation of several of our listing policies. Specifically, using an auction listing as an advertisement, more than ten (10) identical auctions, and inappropriate links to other auction sites and to sites where items prohibited on eBay are sold. Therefore, we have ended these auctions and all fees have been credited to your account.

Please view our guideline page for a better understanding of our auction policies and how they affect the way you list your items: http://pages.ebay.com/help/community/png-list.html

For information on infringing, prohibited or questionable items, please view: http://pages.ebay.com/help/community/png-items.html

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please be aware future incidents of this nature can lead to the suspension of your account. We value you as a member of our community and wish to continue this relationship, so we must ask you to refrain from any violations of the Listing Policies or User Agreement in the future.

If you are unsure, or if you have a questionable item, rather than run the risk of having it ended by eBay, it would be best for you to email moreinfo@ebay.com with the item in question before listing it. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about listing procedures.

Well, Mike, I gotta say that you were pretty clearly violating several of their rules (not even knife-specific rules). You wanted a warning? Well, it looks to me like you got one. They didn't kick you off this time. That was actually quite restrained of them, IMHO.

A lot of dealers make a lot of money on eBay. It is their court, they brought the ball, so they get to make the rules.

Something Chuck said made me think:

My suggestion to you is to make up some new business name, knivesLegalOnEbay.com, go to one of those free hosting places, and just put up a site that welcomes visitors and explains that to see the real stuff, they need to go to 1sks.com, but don't make that a link, just text. Sure, folks now have to type the URL, but eBay can't claim it as a link.

Sort of a "degrees of separation" paradox. If Ebay did object to a link to a link (i.e. totallylegalknives.com linking to evilswitchblades.com): because of the search engines; that would disqualify anyone from posting an auction on Ebay.

disney.com links to yahoo.com which links to pamelaandersonsswitchbladesmp3sandwarez.com

I bet you could connect any two sites through a "switchblade" link as quick as through a "Kevin Bacon" link.

Besides all of which, 1sks very clearly offers "assisted opening knives" only to federally qualified buyers. But since they sent such an obviously boilerplate rejection letter, I'm sure no one even took the time to check out the site.

My other big gripe with Ebay? It seems like every other week I hear on national news: "Top auction site Ebay shows a listing for the virginity of a 98 year old quadraplegic Roswell crash survivor. Company officials said they would remove the auction listing as soon as it was determined to be a hoax, or when the media value had run out."

You can't buy advertising like that. But you can have employees post bogus auctions through anonymizer.

Never dealt with Ebay. Never will.

Joe

My main reason for using Ebay is to clear either dead, old or 1 of a kind inventory that I do not think will move here as well.

I will build a less offensive web site and offer products through it on Ebay.

Yeah, you can say all you want about eBay's inconsistency. It's like speed laws. There aren't enough officers to watch every mile of every road every hour of every day. So, is it unfair that one out a thousand violators gets ticketed? Often, enforcement of speed laws comes when people who live in the area call and complain. Is that fair? No, but that's how it works. So, we all learn how to work around it. Portland is home of one of the most notorious speed traps in the nation, The Terwilliger Curves section of I5. I know better than to go more than 53 in The Curves. I got through them three to five times a week and probably one out of three times I go through, as I get to pass some guy who flew past me going into the curves but has now been slowed down by a flashing blue light (and there's not a K-Mart within miles
wink.gif
. On the other hand, I've never seen Beef Bend Road or Tonquine Road patrolled. There aren't even any speed limit signs on Tonquine. But, Tonquine ends into Oregon Street, and Oregon Street is 25! So, after you've flown down Oregon, you'd better respect Oregon because the local authorities, the folks with the aforementioned flashing blue lights, sure do. So, after years of living ticketless in this area, I've learned a few tricks. Take it nice and slow through The Curves. Fly down Tonquine Road if you like, but slow down on Oregon Street.

Likewise, the savvy eBay seller learns to work within the rules to get what he wants, lots of sales for high prices. And there is no argument that eBay is THE #1 Venue for online knife sales. The most knives, the best knives, the highest dollars are on eBay, love it or leave it 'cause you can't deny it.

BTW, eBay is a goldmine for buyers too. I've bought knives on eBay for 1/10 of their value. And I've bought many other things there too. I was selecting a wedding gift for a friend recently. I knew what I wanted and I had the catalog showing it right in my hand and was about to call and order when the eBay screen up on my computer caught my eye. "Why not?" I thought. Sure enough, the exact item was up for auction brand new in the box and closing in twenty minutes. I entered my bid and won that auction for a little less than 1/5 of the catalog price for the same item. It arrived and is perfect. That was a big savings.

Not every auction on eBay goes like this. I've seen auctions close at twice the retail price of the item. I've heard horror stories about eBay purchases. But, I do believe that the knife collector who ignores eBay is really missing great opportunities. I also believe that the knife dealer who ignores eBay is also missing some great opportunities especially to move those "troublesome inventory items" that any retailer seems to accumulate a few of.
