Ebay and Why do people do this?

I go on ebay regularly to find and old AUS-8 Delica. I want an old one that is nib or near nib fully serrated so I can test and compare it against other AUS-8 knives. I can buy a NEW one for less than $42 with $6 s&h with VG-10 steel. But that is a night and day comparison.

The problem is that the old knives with the “lesser” steel sell for so high!

Check this out:

$50.99 for a USED Delica?

Can someone please explain this to me.

$40 with shipping is reasonable.
$30 sounds fair. But the knives I look at go for $50+

You see, I am looking for a Spyderco with a 3" blade, fully serrated, with little to no belly. I want to test the serration’s usefulness not the knife.

I prefer a Frn, AUS-8, Delica. But I’ll take SS, AUS-6 or even a 440 Native IF the price is right.

But that is what boggles me. Why do the older knives with second gen steel command the money the new fourth gen steel knives do?

Is there something I am missing?

Thanks in advance.

BTW, I am willing to buy a new Delica if I have to, it just does not make sense that it would be chaeper.

I have come to the conclusion that it's simply an addiction.

People think that because something is listed on Ebay that it must be a great deal. I have seen this happen many many times. Often I see people who buy from a regular online store and then sell the product on Ebay for a profit.

People just don't do research before they buy stuff on Ebay.....or the just have a lot of money to spend.

GO figure ;)

You're preachin' to the choir, buddy! I bid on a lot of Spydercos on ebay and I keep getting outbid by these ahas-soles. :grumpy:

People know how to use ebay, but they don't know how to use Froogle.

It's not just ebay, it seems to be any auction. I've been to auctions where people have bought second hand items for more than i know I can buy them brand new in a shop not too far away.

It's weird.

Stupid people and their money are soon parted.
(Don't know who said that.)

I have yet to find a good deal on ebay. I can always find a better deal if I do a little looking around.

Some people prefer the old model with the molded clip ( instead of the new one ), so to them it might be worth paying the extra money for a discontinued model. Or it might be a collector trying to complete his Delica collection...

The AUS-8 Delica with integral clip is a pre '98 model, discontinued. In time, it has become a collectible item, therefore its price. I think you can get a brand new VG-10 Delica with less than 40$.

You must be finding some killer deals because I've never found better deals than I have on ebay. Sure, there's some junk there, and sometimes people pay way too much, but overall I'd say you're not going to find a better price than on ebay. Just check out some of the prices through ebay stores like Flamesnknives or Razorsharpknife and try to find a better price anywhere else.

Knives indeed seem to be rather bad choice for eBay purchase, unless one is living overseas - stores usualy charge outrageous shippingso it's cheaper to find a(more expensive) offer on eBay but with reasonable cheaping, for a lower combined cost. To illustrate:when i was looking for Kershaw's Vapor and Vapor II the lowest prices I found were in online stores (and allegedly they sell cheaper still at Wallyworld). But combined with shipping it was cheaper to get them from eBay - they costed ~$32-35 apiece with shipping and all; they woudl have costed me $45-50 or more if purchased from online store (or purchased here). Between two knives I bought I practically saved another knife's worth so eBay does offer 'bargains' (polite for less painful anal intercourse - free lube) for folks like me even when buying knives.

Certain other hardware (computer parts for example) are very cheap on eBay too and it's practically the only source of some out-of-production hardware which is impossible to find otherwise.

Some people might also be willing to spend a little more on that knife because it lacks the boye dent. I think all new Delica's have the boye dent, a feature I very much dislike.

You will probably never find a bargain on a knife that is correctly identified. You are bidding against every idiot in America and half the idiots in the world. You look for a knife that is labeled "old knife" and you can identify as a Spyderco. You might also find one that is accidently labeled as a Spiderco or a Delico, Deleca, Delicca, etc. I have got great deals when the seller forgot to call his product a "knife". He identified it as a "Sportec". I found it by searching for D2 (alloy) without the word "knife". It should have gone for around $80 and instead went for $32.

Although I doubt the Boye Dent is really to prevent accidental closing by "fleshy hands;" It seems it would improve the thumb grip on the lock bar. This would in turn make one hand closing easier.

Of course, I have no first hand knowledge. This is a guess.

What can be wrong with the Boye Dent?

BTW, Mr Clark, good idea.

And before I forget (again), Thank you all for replying. Knowing other people experience the same thing removed the frustration.:)

As mentioned above, you can get screwed on eBay and you can get some bargains too. Like the LNIB (but no box) Titanium Bob Lum Tanto I picked up for around $85 bucks a couple months ago. :) :D :) :D

as faramir is explaining, sometime it sound stupid to buy on e-bay compare to online store but, online store are doing real invoice ... on which Fedex base his percentage taht would be payed to the custom.
For me buying a BM-940 on online store, i did payed additionnal cost nearly +35 % (Fedex Delivery cost, then "tax upon delivery to be reversed to french custom", then fee for that service, etc..)...
this is not legal, but when dealing with someone over e-bay, you could suggest him to write a proforma invoice with "no value - gift", in that matter avoiding to pay tax.... :D
But i won't do that , as it is not legal.... ;)

Unless you don't get what you bought you can't get screwed on eBay IMO. You decide the price you are willing to pay and on the internet you can compare prices easily.
The price you are willing to pay can depend however on other things then the object involved. A seller willing to ship worldwide has a larger audience and can stil offer a great deal to someone outside the US although the price is higher then from another seller only willing to ship in the US.
Customs are less interested in objects named doorhangers then knives and in general global priority mail passes customs without problems while a big box stamped knives from Spyderco worth $200 will cost you 20% more.
Then of course there are those willing to outbid you paying far more than BIN prices just because they are stupid or just fooling around.

Wow, I think you need to look around more.

There are a few deals on ebay......but if you've NEVER found better deals than what's on ebay you don't look in the right places.

Try Froogle.

ebay and this forum are the best places to get great deals... you just need to spend some time browsing and comparing, it's a full time job! :)
