I just bought one about a month ago. I got the 2 burner bladesmith model so I could try to make damascus. I have forged one blade with it and am very happy with the forge's performance for forging. My first attempt at forge welding was unsuccessful. But, I don't know how to forge weld. So, I don't know if it's my fault or the forge's. (I suspect it's my lack of know-how.) Whether it will forge weld or not, I'm keeping it. It's vastly superior to the home-make one burner I was using. Attached is the resulting knife - just finished it this morning.

Regards and good luck,
Jacque

I am in the brain storming  stages of trying to figure out  how to put together one unit that would do the complete "heat treating process". I am not trying to forge or derail this thread  just thought here was a good place to add to discussion. I have been drawing/thinking thru a coal and propane fired unit. Something that would take an 18"+ piece of steel. One of the "Old boys" :D here alluded to this thought being old technology :o:confused: . Anybody have any other thoughts to share?

Hi All

Thanks for the updates and ideas.

To me its pure economics not the inability or lack of skill not wanting to build a forge.

Where i am located the costs of the material, such as Kaowool, ITC and various bits and pieces is roughly double to what people pay in the USA. So when you can buy a forge for less on Ebay for less than the material costs, and the price of a locally made one, what would you do?

Knifemakers who live in the USA are indeed fortunate when it comes to prices, availability and competition. Once you start having many hobbies in life, the quicker you start believing in the ideal capitalist model like that of the good ole US of A

Cheers

I bought the two burner blacksmith model 2 years ago. I like it very much. I modified it with Inswool and Satanite to round the chamber some and even out the flow.

It works very efficiently even at 5700'.

I think that for the money you can't beat it.

Next time I will probably build my own with parts (the ones I can't scrounge) from Darren Ellis.
