When i looked at some drive wheels and idlers on ebay, i couldnt believe the prices on things. They had a 5 inch aluminum drive wheel for like $35. I also see low priced aluminum idlers and tracking wheels to. I am wondering if i should buy from places like UsaKnifemaker or if these are any good. I would like to get some on the cheap, but do not want to get ripped off. Please chime in and help me out so I dont get screwed out of my hard earned money :)

Thanks,
Gary Pogue

You tend to get what you pay for, but just check their feedback and maybe get an idea of quality. Send the sellers a message and try to gather their bona fides. Some are probably a deal and others probably a turd.

I feel your pain. Wheels are expensive but keep in mind they are probably the most important l part of a grinder.

Good luck,

The aluminum drive wheels by the vwj..... fellow you see on ebay seem great. His roller wheels look good, too. His prices are reasonable, not dirt cheap. I always caution people about buying from online dealers who are too low priced.

On a solid wheel, the only concern is trueness. If they are lathe turned with CNC, trueness is probably going to be OK. On 2" rollers, the bearings are what is the main concern. His seem to be good. I would say to give his stuff a try. For about $150 plus shipping you can get a set of 2" rollers, a 4" tracking wheel, and 5" drive wheel.

Rubber coated and contact wheels are a bit harder to decide on, but feedback and carefully reading the info usually tells you if they are well made and have the right materials. Trying to save money on a contact wheel can be a waste of money.

I am looking some of his wheels, I'm no expert on wheels or anything, but they look pretty decent for a grinder build. I just might have to try them out :D
