This 1954 Knife sports a gold car key and 2 silver blades, according to the seller.I have a Schrade 708 which has the auto makers shield on scale however has anyone heard of keys being incorporated within a knife? I guess they would be bulk produced and then cut individually for each vehicle.Would this knife be unusual and rare or common? Any comments. Hoo Roo

G'Day I have a second question if I may, my trusty fishing knife is a Fishermans Favorite on shield with yellow scales and Tang Stamp Henry Sears & Son 1865. Is it likely to be made by Schrade? The carbon steel blade would be one of the finest I own for holding a shaving sharp edge.
I have heard the various comments on fishing knives re Pride and Friend but havnt seen Favorite mentioned. Thanks for any info. Hoo Roo from Oz.

I asked about the key knife when I picked one up last summer. You might find the replies by searching the archives. Search under "imperial key". Hopefully someone who is wise in the ways of the achives can dig out it out and post a link. They aren't rare here, just interesting. Down where you hang your hat, they may be harder to find (it would depend on whether the key knife giveaway promotion was done in Oz) and of greater interest/value. Certainly cool, especially if you are into cars.

Henry Sears & son was its own entity producing knives since the late 1800's. To my knowledge Schrade did not make their knives. I am not sure when they stopped producing though, so perhaps they did contract out in later days. Maybe someone with more knowledge will come along and help.

According to Goins, Henry Sears & Son of Chicago was in business from 1865 - 1897 when Farwell-Ozum-Kirk & Co of St. Paul acquired their trademark name, and add the "1865". They were a hardware wholesaler. They discontinued pocketknives in 1959. There is no notation that F.O.K.& Co. was actually a manufacturer.

Just since we're on the subject, this might be of passing interest.

This knife was my grandfathers. The tang stamp on the main blade says:

Imperial
PROV. USA

My mom gave it to me after I started collecting knives, but she didn't know anything about it, like what kind of car it went to, what year, etc. I always just assumed this was a promotional item that came with a car he bought.

Most of the promotions were inked on to the celluloid with the dealer's info. which can give the car's make. If the ink has worn off, look for a letter or letters stamped on the key. Often the keys are stamped with the initials of the car maker. The one I picked up is for a GM. It would be hard to narrow down much further (model and year) without records or access to people who remember the details from when they were originally given away.

Checked another that belongs to a buddy, marked "C" with advertisement for a Chrysler dealership.
