Ebay Rant

I have been buying knives off eBay for a couple of years.
I got caught with misleading descriptions, and one knock off, but generally have picked up some outstanding bargains.

My interest is in traditional folders, which are not "cool" right now, and I have a little private list of eBay sellers who know what I collect and sometimes make offers before listing on eBay.

Esav said it all: Caveat Emptor (Let the Buyer Beware)

Research your prices and your knives and ask questions if not sure.

I love eBay trading, the cut and thrust, wheeling and dealing, and seeing who comes out on top. Great fun for a few bucks.

I just bought a bunch of Schrade knives on ebay. I stuck with "new in box" and reliable sellers.
I bought what I thought would be future "collectables"
The only one I bought that was used was from a seller here in Colorado and it was the only one to be totally misrepresented.
I am waiting to see If I get my money back.
I took a gamble and might lose 20 bucks , not the worse beating I have ever taken.
Moral of this tale.. be careful and know your stuff or you going to get "taken"

My gripe isn't with E Bay, it's with the people who sell items and misrepresent them, I've been collecting for over 30 years, I have a fairly extensive mechanical/machinist background, I can spot obvious misrepresentations, fakes and most fakes, but what about the guy who just sunk $300 into a Case xxx tested tested tanto from 1920.

I guess you gotta learn the hard way some times, it's just a shame that with so many nice people in the business there are also snakes and rats with them.

i like ebay, i just picked up two brand new CRKT prowlers for less than 40$ shipped. i did learn my lesson on being a careful buyer a few years ago though. i won an auction for a little zippo lockback and an ontario spec plus folder, both of which were represented as NIB. When i got them i was pretty miffed to find someone had sharpened them on a grinding wheel and totally ruined the blades.

Various shops in India are turning out thousands of fake British Commonwealth knives and swords. Some are so obviously fake that only the MOST innocent and uninformed could be fooled. Some are remarkably "aged."

I have communicated with eBay sellers about fakes. Some have 100% records and have paid substantial bucks to acquire such "good" fakes. All but one withdrew the items from auction.

There is just no substitute for knowing your subject and your vendor.

And yes, I've been skinned a couple of times. :(
