ECCKS- who's going?

thanks- yeah i couldnt believe how little was available for sale, but it was well worth it to be able to see a lot of the blades and makers ive wondered about in person. im surprised some of the bigger names there only had a few knives on hand to sell when the event is supposed to last all weekend.

my friend bought a very cool damasteel tighe that i was prepared to buy, but i let him take it since it was his first venture into nonproduction blades. he more than repayed the favor since it was his name that got called on the lambert lottery and he let me take his spot. also the elishwitz knives with the lever lock on the scales were pretty cool as well- but the three they had went immediately via lottery.

there were also a lot of other makers I had never heard of that had some amazing products- so it was cool to have exposure to those since id otherwise never know about them. there was a south african brand that i took the card for that had some insane flippers with beautiful scales and filework (cant remember the name- but ill edit this when i find their card). if i didnt get the lambert i was likely leaving with one of those as a solid consolation.

Van Heerden or Deventer right?

i have the card for JD Van Deventer too, but when i look at the map i think it was actually Thorburn Knives that Im referring to. If I had more cash I'd have gotten one.

edit: i googled pictures it was Thorburn

another thing i thought was kind of strange was how there are purveyors there with tables mixed in with the makers who in some cases were charging hefty markups for a similar knife available from a maker a few tables over. some (not all) had a sleezy gun and knife show pedler vibe to them.

... I did think TNK was very cool and wish they had more stuff available (mostly had Sebenzas)

and back on the limitted stock topic: i spoke to a maker who said he originally came down with 20 pieces, yet was down to his last 5 when the doors opened at 11am friday. apparently thats how those purveyors get those new models so quickly, and why there was less left for the public direct from the maker

When I walked in door. I had a plan I went a got the first blade on my list . When I walked over to my next table there was a Italian maker that had 7 knives that all looked the same. I asked If I could look at them He pointed to one
of them that was not spoken for and it was the least desirable in the group. These were $1700/$2000 dollar folders and this was 5 min in to the show. As I walked around the show I realized what was happening dealers purchased
all the knives.

If I was the promoter I would put a stop to that . I can understand the makers point of view. A bird in the hand is better than two in the bush when I drive for five hours and the best custom knives are gone we have a problem.

Someday people will stop showing up and the only people at the show will be the makers and the dealers. The only dealers that should be allowed at the show should be production knife dealers. Let the custom knife dealers get in line like the rest of us.

i hear you... i understand that back room deals or at least early access deals happen internally, but to combat that i think the tables at the show should be only makers. if they want to trade with one another- im cool with that, but having online stores cherry pick ahead of an event that is supposed to cater to customers isnt right.

if makers have good relationships with the purveyors they can deal with them privately on their own time and not jeopardize the integrity of the show. pie in the sky- i guess- but yeah youre right people will stop going if theres nothing but leftovers and all the good stuff is already marked up to prices they can find online without having to drive and buy tickets

On a positive note I did score this puukko from Pekka . Probably because most people
Could care less about puukko knives in the US and this Dozier is my new EDC all
Ti liners and hardware and D2 blade.
