ecola state park, oregon coast

Sorry for bit of a hijack but how many of us live in the area? I count at least 5 in this thread alone. You guys ever make it to river-8's trees and quiet?

Yep Portland here, but brand new to the boards. Not sure what river-8's trees and quiet is.

you can start in either cannonbeach or seaside. i prefer the south route from seaside.
the state park area is day use only. so no overnite parking. but there is lots of parking closeby. this area is full of history, if you take to that sorta thing. seaside is larger and more "commercial" than cannonbeach. both have large municipal "visitor" parking lots that are free and allow overnite parking.
there is also a shuttle between the two towns if you dont feel like hitching a ride

with the 4 adirondaks in hikers camp, no need to bring a tent/hammock(unless ya want to of course). my niece and i each brought a pad and a wool blanket. which in early sept temps was just fine. since we went in the middle of the week, there was no one else there. tho there were numerous hikers along the trail to the lookout. theres no reserving an adirondak. just show up and use any of the four if no one else is using them. there is a communal firepit and large covered area with picnic table. also bundles of dry firewood for a $5 donation(theres a metal box for $). nice as tho there is quite a bit of fallen wood to be gathered, it can be very damp. there is no access to drinking water. this time of yr with the chilly nites and frequent rain, not likely there would be any "tourists". unless its really wet, expect frequent hikers from the day use area outside cannonbeach. its a popular trail up from indian beach. its less than a two mile hike mostly up from the nearest parking area. about 4ish into cannonbeach(take the trail not the service road-much more interesting). you will likely be awakened by the sea lions at the tillamook rock lighthouse. amazing how loud they are from that far away. lovely bit of cliffs and woods along the coast. a must do if yr in the area. lots of literature available about the history, flora and fauna if you like, at the visitors centers in both seaside and cannon beach. 1st time i did this trail we left from seaside and returned the same way. didnt go to cannon beach at all. would of done the same this trip, but my niece wanted a day in cannon beach. if you do go to cannon beach i highly recommend bills tavern. they make their own beer and have good, fresh food. some of the best clam chowder ive had. inexpensive too. enjoy!

Thanks man. Yeah I'm a regular to the area just never heard of this spot. In fact I took a growler of Bill's beer the last time I went on a hike at ecola. Nothing like hiking to an empty beach with your girl and drinking some beer. Great times.:D

Trees and quiet is a weekend skills and hanging out event they have across the boarder in washington. Not sure but I thought it was every sunday. Never actually been myself.

pdx here. and i like to know more about this event. thanks

Some really cool shots there SJ, thanks for sharing. Sounds like those "root caves" could be used as a frame for a shelter in the winter.

I am in Vancouver, Wa. and all though I have not been to Trees and Quiet, I have been to five years worth of RatMischief with River-8, 360joules, Dirtling, SnakeDoc and about 30 others. A great bunch of NW guys and gals, many of whom are SAR volunteers and most are on the forum. RatMischief is held south of Mt Adams in Gifford Pinchot NF. I have a cabin near Mt. St. Helens, and spend a lot of time hiking around there. I spent my summers growing up in Cannon Beach and have hiked the OP's trail several times (a long time ago).
Great pictures and a wonderful thread.

sj, tell me more about this hike. Is this a strenious hike? How long does it take roughly to the cabin area and then home the next day? Would you recommend it as an overnighter, two nights or more?

Thx!

its a fairly strenuous hike. starting at sea level. up n down, rooty, muddy most of the year and can be downright wet sometimes of the year. the trail map indicates that elevation goes up to 1250' at the highest point. tho i have an altimeter on my watch i did not measure. cannot give you an accurate measure for time as my neice was gathering plants and we did lots of stopping and discussion. shldnt be any problem no matter yr fitness level(as long as you do some hiking i guess) getting to hikers camp in one day from either cannon beach or seaside. with plenty of time to explore and get dinner(once more dependent on time of yr and what time the suns a setting of course. and what time o day ya start) from hikers camp north the terrain is more total elevation gain, as there are many more ups and downs. from cannon beach north it is mostly up with less elevation change. up from cannon beach over a head then back down to indian beach then pretty much up all the way to hikers camp. heading south outta seaside it up n down with several opportunities to go all the way down to the beach or stay on main trail and sorta a roller coaster hike. typical(in my experience) of oregon coastal trails.
