As many of you know, I picked up Ed Caffrey's fabulous Prairie Storm san-mai bowie at this year's Blade Show. After making payments on it for six months, I was exited to finally receive it. However, once I got home from the show I came to realize that it was simply too big of a knife for me to fully appreciate. Needless to say, I was disappointed that I didn't feel the way I wanted to about it. It had NOTHING to do with the knife (which was fabulous) - I just shouldn't have purchased a knife that big. I didn't want to sell the knife without getting another Caffrey piece in its place. As luck would have it Daniel O'Malley at BladeGallery.com had one of the five knives that Ed submitted to the ABS to receive his Mastersmith rating. After exchanging a few e-mails with Daniel, we sent our knives to each other in trade. This was the result:

This was Ed's Mastersmith fighter, named "Desert Eve". It features a 5 3/8" blade with Ed's 1084 & 15N20 random-pattern damascus blade. The OAL is 10 1/4". The handles are Thuya burl with a water buffalo horn spacer. The guard is nickel silver. There's not a lot I can add to the picture. The fit and finish are outstanding. The knife is incredibly light and quick. The damascus is simply amazing. The materials compliment each other perfectly. I'm much happier with this size knife, and I'm glad I stumbled across it. Ed's definitely a maker to watch in the coming years. Check out his website at http://www.caffreyknives.com .

P.S. - Forumite Bo ended up purchasing Prairie Storm, giving him a match for his other Caffrey san-mai bowie. It looks like everyone won in the end.

Not only is it a perfect match for Wind Song, But I now seem to be hooked on Big Bowie Knives.
