I recently purchased a Rolex Submariner K SN from Ed.

The watch arrived very quickly and he was very good to do business with. It seems to be authentic.

It was this item:

However, he advertised it as "near mint". He says, and I quote, "This watch is in near mint condition, with only hair line scratches on the case, or bezel. The heavy Oyster Fliplock Bracelet, the new version with solid end links, has only a few minor scuffs as evidence that it has been worn. Buy a new Submariner, wear it for a few weeks, and it will look just like this one".

There are no more comments as to cosmetic condition.

This is very much not the case. As described, there were some minor hairline scratches on the bracelet and clasp. To me, wear limited to such scratches would qualify as near mint.

On the other hand, the case has visible and substantial dings. On the lug horns in particular, there are five dings, one at least 1/16" in length and deep enough that they cannot be polished out without motorized refinishing.

The upper right lug horn has abrasion marks that are 1/4" in length and quite obvious.

The lower right horn has a spot about 1/8" long where the leading edge is completely flattened, as if it were banged into a desk.

The bezel has a visible dent.

Beneath the bezel dent, the crystal has a tiny chip on the edge at 11 o'clock and a 1/32" diameter multi-scratch scuff right in the middle of the cyclops.

This is significant wear. In fact, it might even be considered "Good" or "Good+" in some grading systems.

I am not taking advantage of Ed's liberal return policy as I feel that I will probably put more marks on it as I wear it, but I am upset that his description was not more accurate. In addition, I would have spent $60 to ship both ways.

I would have liked to see NO DINGS on the case and absolutely no marks at all on the crystal, for a "near mint" condition watch.

I would not have purchased this watch at the price if I could have inspected it in person.

Today, I emailed him regarding these issues, and he replied with pleasantries and did not address my concerns at all.

I just wanted to let the community know that Watchseller.com's "near mint" may not be exactly what we might consider "near mint".

Please address any questions or comments to me here. If this of concern, I can try to provide photographs.

Thank you for your time.

I would contact the seller and see if he would adjust the price or refund shipping. Otherwise I would post your comments on the various watch forums so maybe the next buyer will know to question him about the condition and disregard his grading. Larry

Here's a set of pictures that illustrate some of the dings and marks.
