Ed Schempp Kris/Persian 75 mm

Seems like people either love or dislike the blade shape based on aesthetics vs. practicality. I've owned (and still own) lotsa Spydies, but I have to honestly say that when it would come time to sharpen this thing, I'd :barf:

Sorry, ain't gonna buy one even for $5 ...and by the way, the adage that Spyderco engineers design blades "..in the dark.." certainly doesn't appear to apply here.. Nothing personal, Spyderco !

It looks as if anything that can sharpen a recurve or serrations, will sharpen the Kris folder. The looks are a matter of taste, but I'm pretty sure that it is a very functional design. Everything -from the Shabaria to the Civilian- that came out of the factory was made with function over looks in mind.

Sorry, You were right and I was wrong,

The good news is we're getting TWO new Ed-Schempp-esigns.
In truth Anson, I had what amounted to an unfair advantage here. I own one of Ed's hand made prototypes for the 75mm Persian, so had a pretty fair mental picture of what the production version would look like. Plus, I damn near had to pick my lower jaw up off the floor last winter after seeing a photo of his two prototypes for the folding Kris in Blade magazine. Those images have haunted me ever since. Sweet as the Kris looks with a VG10 blade, stainless bolsters, and black micarta scales, it looks even better (at least to my eyes) with a damascus blade and bolsters and bark ivory scales.

Hey we may even get luckier somewhere down the road. The two Krises in that photo in Blade were different sizes. ;) :D

who is this Ed Schempp guy anyway?

How about doing a quick google search, or at least use the search function?

But I will help you along:
1.) Wheat farmer (hence his trademark)
2.) Rather accomplished custom knifemaker who makes his own pattern welded steel (including one in form of the Spyderco bug)
3.) Multiple times rope cutting champion
4.) Designer of a pretty popular Spyderco design called the Persian
5.) Member of the this forum

Sounds like a cool enough guy, maybe I'll meet him sometime.

Any chance on getting blade length, etc.? Too bad that Kris isn't ambidextrous--but I'd probably get one anyway.

Nope, no specs available yet. Just a picture, and it is just a prototype pic. It may chnage from that, but I hope not!! :)

Did a bit of juggling in my favorite graphics program. Assuming (and admittedly it's a fairly large assumption) that because both clips are curved and have an "odd" hole pattern, the Kris is using the same clip as the C83 Persian. Then the picture below "should" be a pretty good approximation of the relative sizes of the two. If correct it would indicate the blade and overall lengths to be very similiar.

Ed Schempp is a helluva nice guy, and if my sources are to be believed, just about *the* go-to guy for exotic steel.

My wife and I met Ed at BLADE and he is one of the nicest knife makers I've ever met!
