EDC a 77 (or how to devalue a collectors item)

Let's look at a few truths.

Carrying a decent knife, knowing it's in your pocket and ready for use is one of the most rewarding feelings in connexion to knife 'collecting' Far better than fretting and getting vexed about loss of value- knives are anyway very poor 'investments' by and large.

If you were to sell it later on, many, many people appreciate a well used, well cared for knife, very appealing.

Sometimes with great works of art, a fabulously wealthy collector buys a masterpiece and hoards it in the dark. Pathetic and disturbing. Another collector allows their masterpieces to be on view so that others can enjoy and be moved by it. Deeply impressive. Same with using a knife you find beautiful. Too beautiful to use means you don't actually have the need for the knife and don't need to use any knife, frankly.

Finally, this is a BARLOW with a third of its substance in bolster, the great proletarian work-knife!

Did you ever make a meal or see one in a restaurant that's too good to eat? I thought not:D:D:D

Thanks, Will

I have but one NF 77, a single clip from a couple of years ago. I used it right away and never looked back. I'm a user, not a collector, despite what my wife might think.

Oh, and I've gotten some of my nicest patinas from cutting strawberries! For a while you get this cool, variegated red/blue thing going.

Bravo to you!!!! Use the knife like you stole it.

I have a few nice collector pieces. Some stay secreted away. Some I’ve managed to pry from their lonely little tubes, and placed into my pocket.

I took a big dive once, and decided to pocket one of Charlie’s very special Texas Camp Knives. I’ve never regretted that decision for a second, and always take enormous pleasure in both carrying and using it.

In my little corner of the world, I value the ones that I use more than the ones I choose not to, because by using them, a bond is formed between me and the knife. It somehow becomes more than just a mere object, but an indispensable tool in my daily life. The ones that sit brand new in their dark hiding place are just things...

Did you give yours a tea bath or something? I've used and carried mine a lot and it's not darkened like that.

Good for you Russell !!!! It is pretty obvious that you really like this knife and that does not surprise me . The more you use it , the more you are going to like it . If you really want to put some patina on it quick , slowly slice a stalk of rhubarb length wise . Your Ironwood is a beautiful knife my friend . I am glad to see that it will be a User .

It's done a ton of food prep. Lots of lemons for beers and more lemons and onions for grilling beer can chicken. That lemon juice works really fast. The knife has kind of become the official family cap lifter and paring knife for our trips to the Adirondacks.

That right there is what it's all about! the memories that are created by using that knife will be a treasure to you and yours in years to come. Well done!

I knocked the collector value off of mine by trying to darken up the bone a little to more of a red wine color. It’s amazing how altering the knife a little made me so much more excited to use it because it’s “mine” and not something that can’t be ruined because of its theoretical value.

I'd respond to each one of you in turn but I'd just say the same thing over and over again- You guys are awesome! Thanks for all the varied opinions on the matter...they're fantastic to read.

As for the knife, it was just used to slice up its first family roast beef dinner. I caught my dad eyeing it from time to time :)
