EDC an automatic?

Love my mini Infidel just can't carry in California.

I also have 2 Lightnings and a UTX-70 that is Cali legal (blade under 2").

Surprisingly though, I bought this Delta tanto and it fires hard and has very little blade play. I carry it around the house. 2 3/4" blade.

Thats a cool otf, is it raven crest? How do you like the utx 70?

I like autos and have a few in my EDC rotation. A few from Kershaw's Launch series (lovely knives for the money), some Protechs (Godfather, Monaco and TR4) and my only OTF, a Microtech Scarab Executive.

The Scarab has a very nice, practical blade and it does everything I need from a folding knife just fine with the exception of any messy tasks that might get gunk into the handle. It's not an easy knife to clean and any debris in the mechanism can hinder blade deployment. I pair it with a SAK, which I'm not afraid to beat up or get dirty.

Great idea adding the SAK, I may do that one day as well. I like your set up!

OP, I don't know exactly what your knife needs are but an OTF will do what any regular folding knife will do. You just have to try not to drag refuse into the handle upon retraction and if you do, clean it out at the earliest opportunity. Also, keep it lubed per manufacturer specs without overdoing it. As far as the blade itself, personally, I'm skeptical about the utility value of a DE blade. YMMV
I am skeptical of DE blades for edc as well.. All the more reason to try it out ;)

Yup, Raven Crest.

The UTX-70 is my only MT knife.
It's ok. Hard to fire but I have to get use to it.

I've been thinking about getting some sort of OTF to EDC. I've never handled one except for a very cheaply made one many years ago so have been wondering what they can take. It seems like sometimes I read they are plenty sturdy and then other times I read that they all have some sort of blade play when open. I guess a little blade play doesn't mean it's not sturdy and reliable but doesn't sound great either. So I will look forward to hearing your thoughts on it and it would be nice if you could give some examples of the tasks you do with it and a few pictures would be great as well. Though I realize when you are working that taking a picture is the last thing you're thinking about.

If anyone else has any thoughts on what an OTF can reasonably be expected to do I would love to hear about it. And also what the most reliable brand or model is. I imagine they all have a very similar internal mechanism with just minor variations in design? I was thinking about one of the Benchmade H&K models as a first while they are still available but would rather buy once than having to go thru a half dozen to figure out what's good.

Anyways, good luck with your new knife, and more importantly good luck with your training and future deployment! Thank you for your service!!!
You should try an OTF, it doesnt hurt to try out and see what you like. I will let you know what they can take through my experience. The gentleman at Benchmade told me that they can take over 400 lbs of weight pushing the blade inward. (Sounds a lot stronger than I thought)

I personally chose Benchmade over Microtech for customer service and warranty. The fact that I can have free repairs done, free sharpening (they are much better than my past experience at this), free tuning, and the blade replaced if needed for only $20 sold me on it. Especially for this "test" phase since they are just down the road.

Im a card carrying member of the otf edc club. Much handier than many give it credit for and a lot more robust than many believe.

Definitely do. An OTF makes an excellent EDC knife. I carried a UT6 for years. The knife is battle scarred and now lives an easy life of retirement.

Here's my unsolicited take on long term OTF carry:

They are truly one handed and probably the coolest of all autos.

I pretty much want two things from a carry piece, automatic and utility. For me that means a single edge. I'd previously had two Makoras and carried one of them, but the double edge always felt more stabby than utilitarian. That impeded my use of the knife. Not to mention the added challenge of sharpening a DE blade.

My UT is dead reliable. It has about the same minimal blade play as any other MT OTF...which matters not one bit under use. Blade play in an OTF, IMO, is only something to carp about when all you do with the knife is play with it.

I never had a problem with anything getting into the handle, but I was careful about that and I don't work in an environment where that was difficult.

The knife functioned best with the absolute minimum of Remoil. Really, the drier the better. Two drops every so often and a semi annual flush with WD40. I'm not sure what's best for the Inidel.

So, good luck with the Infidel, it looks like a cool knife. I never owned one because I was all deep into MT when BM came out with it and my OTF needs were already well covered.

This is pretty cool. I like to see people edc'ing stuff that's not generally thought of as edc material. I occasionally carry one of my A.G. Russell Stings or older Gerber Guardians alongside (or even in place of one) of my folders. Double edge daggers are more limited that many other blade styles, due to lack of a spine on which to rest your thumb/index finger and generally thicker geometry behind the edges, but it's surprising how useful a small dagger can be for every day stuff all the same.

Funny how so many things you wouldn't think are illegal in Texas actually are.

I know. Even Cali has better double edge laws than Texas.
But, you guys have good ccw laws. I'd trade for that in a heartbeat 👍

This mirrors my experience with EDCing an Ultratech very well. I've been carrying this old Vero Beach UT regularly for going on thirteen years and it has never once failed to cycle reliably. I think I gave it one drop of RemOil once some years back. That's it. I just wipe the blade before closing and it's good to go. The edge is ground nice and thin and seldom needs a touch-up. I think this one is ATS34 or 154CM. The CF top and the small old-style pocket clip that mounts in a milled recess with a single screw keep the weight under three ounces. A good D/A OTF is, for my tastes, the most convenient light-to-medium use EDC "folder" available.

Here is my Cali legal UTX-70.
I haven't really carried it much..I find it more of a "keychain knife" rather than a practical sized blade. Cool little knife though!

I wanna try and get into edcing an auto, (I have a couple) but feel folders are better suited for most tasks. I guess it depends on what you think you'll encounter. I carry autos as more of a personal happiness thing, but when I feel I will actually use a knife- hunting or work I feel a nice folder is better suited.

I'd like to carry an OTF, but my distaste for Microtech and the fact that double edged knives are illegal in Texas limits me quite a bit.

get a single edge G&G Hawk deadlock.

here is my all titanium version with a single edge 204p blade. it is in my pocket right now, i carry it very often and couldnt be happier with it. it is an incredible knife in every way. it has absolutly ZERO blade play and it opens and closes very easily. ive seen a video of someone using their pinky to fire it. good luck trying that with a microtech scarab! i like the deadlock so much that i am currently waiting on my second one. this one is has a carbon fiber/titanium handle with damasteel inlays and a damasteel blade. i probably wont carry that one as much as my cheaper titanium/204p version
