EDC and self-defense folder ... What should my next 2 knives be?

I would say just get a nice knife that you like for EDC...

It will double as an SD blade if the highly unlikely situation ever comes up.

What Jim said. A 'self defense' knife is a ticket to jail. For self defense, one of the best items to use is a tightly rolled magazine or newspaper, as it breaks no laws and when used correctly, is quite effective.

Hmm the only thing I use a tightly rolled newspaper is my dog lol. I don't think you would have any trouble carrying a knife foor edc/self defense. I'm a police officer in FL and I've never arrested anyone for carrying a knife of any kind unless they had commited another crime. And if in the off chance you have to use it to defend your life I see no problem there either. Of course the laws vary state by state but as long as its not an auto I don't see you having a problem.

Hmmm...would you like to take a job in BC, Lpd? We could use a good dose of common sense up here. ;)

Common since and the Law don't usually jive in today's society.

Even if one is in the right and wins the criminal case they are likely to be in debt for the rest of their lives and can face civil lawsuits here in the US.

Since you already own a Spyderco, I'd recommend a Delica for EDC. Choose whichever variation you like best, they are all great. It's my favourite knife in its size, I never buy duplicates but I somehow ended up with 4 Delicas.

For SD I think you should first get some training and then choose a knife. And keep it legal. If, God forbid, you find yourself in a situation where you have to defend yourself with your knife an illegal blade can turn a clean cut SD case into a legal nightmare. Knives are just tools and a small part of an SD system, packing a big scary knife with no training won't help you too much.

With that being said, I try to keep my SD knives similar to my utility knives (many fulfill both roles) so that I can build the muscle memory necesary to deploy them quickly. Look of some Michael Janich videos, and you'll see that the humble Delica can get the job done if needed. Also, get a training version of whatever knife you choose. I know a lot of guys who carry folders but practice with rubber fixed blades, a good folding trainer is worth its weight in gold and it will help you realize how hard it is to get your folding knife into action in a real fight.

How about stop putting things off and get a large or small Sebenza for EDC and a Spyderco Civilian for self defense. It'll save you a lot of looking around and buying & replacing sub-par folders for these roles. I know the price is a bit more but in the long haul, you'll save time & money.

Other Self Defense folders: CS Rajah 2, Military with full Spyder-edge, Zero Tolerance 0200 (w or w/o serrations), CS X-large Espada, Emerson folding combat Karambit.

one think to consider is the weight of the knife. since it will be something you carry all time light is best. i am torn between two, a starbenza (small sebenza) and a delica.

cziv,

good point about price. the sebenza might cost a lot more but it will be hard to find something better.

For EDC the Spyderco delica ffg. It's light, has great steel, under 3 inches and around $50.

If you want s folder for pure self defense then get the cold steel Spartan. The Spartan I good because of the wave feature (snags fabrick and opens when withdrawn from pocket). It is also a massive folder and has one of the strongest locks (tri-ad).

For a SD folder on the cheap a CRKT Hammond Cruiser is hard to beat. $20 bucks shipped on Ebay right now. Very comfy & secure handle & it opens well with the flipper. Stoutly built & locks up well. Too wide & heavy for me to carry all the time, but for an occasional backup when you feel the need it's made to order.

The Keating Hornet is a SD oriented folder that comes in at 3.1 inches & around $85ish.

A waved Delica would come in under 3 inches & well within your price range. I have one of these but I don't have anything to add that hasn't been said many times over about the Delica model. It has a good reputation for a reason.

Also, consider investing in books or videos on how to use a knife defensively & putting in the time to drill the skills into your muscle memory. Your skill will count much more than the particular knife you have if the unthinkable ever happens.

The Gerber Applegate-Fairbairn Covert & Combat models are made in the USA and are well made in my opinion. Avoid the Cold Steel TriAd as the springs are way too strong and the knives are a real pain to open and close.

ZT350 or the AK47 the AK 47 has a striking pommel to use in self defense, and you dont have to pull out the blade!!! i own both they are great blades

another vote for Spyderco Delica 4--VG-10 steel, light as a feather in pocket and perfect ergonomics.

I'm pretty sure that Chicago has a blade length limit of 2", which is why the Spyderco Chicago model is just under that.

I know that im 2 years late but I would recommend the Kershaw tremor and the cold steel ti-lite. I carry both of these as self defense. And for edc crkt m16 line is good as well as the spyderco tenacious. :)
