I cant say enough good things about my Osprey Kestrel 32. While its a big large for an EDC pack, there quality is simple off the charts. I would look into something smaller from them maybe the Manta 20 or similar.

I can't say enough good things about The North Face, or JanSport. I have one of each. They are probably 10-15 yrs old. They have the elastic water bottle holders on each side. The elastic on them dry rotted & they would not hold anything in. Sent them both back with a letter saying PLEASE FIX---DO NOT REPLACE---IT HAS SENTIMENTAL VALUE. Both of them came back fixed at no charge to me (except 1 way shipping). I am happy & will continue to buy their products. Lifetime warranty ROCKS !!!

I am running a Mystery Ranch sweat pea as an ddc but based on your criteria I would vote for something from the Maxpedition lineup for sure. Please stay away from the gear slinger bags, they are not comfortable and tend to sag.
