I was gifted a MAXPEDITION LUNADA (in khaki) a few weeks ago; it was a great bag, and timely, as my MAXPEDITION FALCON II (in black) required some "rest". With New York City being my stomping ground, I decided to tweak the LUNADA's ergonomics and appearance, as I wanted to avoid the typical "tactical" profile of the EDCs of most of my friends. First of, I took off the factory zipper-pulls, as they were a bit short when using gloves during the cold season. I made a short "hangman's noose" paracord tan camouflage zipper-pull for every zipper of the bag. These included the zipper pulls of the MAXPEDITION ANEMONE (for my cell and smokes) and the MAXPEDITION RADIO POUCH ( Grundig multi-band radio).
I then proceeded to attach a CONDOR ADMIN POUCH to the front of the bag to enable me to attach some morale patches on the Velcro pad. However, of the zipper pull, I made it a longer version of the "hangman's noose" zipper pull that I made for the others and made it in bright orange paracord for aesthetics. Being an ardent paracordist, I decided to make two circular braided lanyards in tan camouflage paracord and bright orange, to make it more visually non-tactical in perspective and to put some personal pizzaz, hahahahaha!!! The top handle was a bit on the thin side, even with the included thin neoprene handle wrap, so I cut off the black neoprene and braided over the handle with a king cobra stitch cover, also in tan camouflage paracord. Since I travel by subway a lot, I decided to forego tempting other people investigating the contents of my bag when slung on my back, tucking in the belt in the CCW panel in the back, and added a regular luggage-handle wrap in black. This made it super comfortable to carry.
We all have different choices in bags, backpacks, messenger-bags, etc., but I always am of the opinion that the best EDC bag is the one the user is happy with. I don't carry too much with me, just an iPAD3 (work, games, e-mail, browsing), my Kindle Fire HD (reading, movies), their respective chargers/cables, a minimalist med kit, my cell, a little cash, smokes, radio, small flashlight, a couple of gear ties, some protein bars and Gatorade. It's not much, i know, but I live just 12 city blocks away from work, so I hope I will be okay...
Whatever your bags you pick, enjoy them. You may personalize them like I did, or leave them factory-vanilla. The best critique of your bag will be yourself, and if you're happy with your set-up, then I'm happy for you. It's ALWAYS nice to be prepared. ALWAYS.
God bless America!
