every time somebody ask for an edc, B?enchmade or spyderco mentioned. Is that because there are superior to all knife makers, or are they the only quality knife makers out there anymore??????????????

A lot of times both companies have models that fit what the poster is asking for. They are quality knives, but not the only quality knives available.

They offer the best quality folders for the money and have excelent and tought out disigns using great steel and US manufacture(most of the time).
They are some of the best company's out there, they maintain high standards and even their imported budget line(red class, byrd) are better than what most other companys have to offer in thier high end.
Those company's just make the best.

It is because they are high quality knives at a reasonable price. There are a few brands equal to or maybe better than these two but there are many brands that that are inferior. I have one of each, a Benchmade Skirmish and a Spyderco Native. Then, I have, for years used the very excellent Spyderco Sharpmaker.

Probably because they consistantly make the best knives for the money. Both make really good quality knives for a reasonable price.

People like Benchmades because of the Axis lock mechanism. Except for a few custom locking designs, it has yet to be bettered for lightning fast, safe opening AND closing.

Buy one of their knives and see for yourself.
You can get a benchmade griptilian for around $60 and a spyderco delica for around the same.

i've been carrying spyderco folders for 20 years now. they have NEVER failed me. i just retire them when they get too dull...or i'm in a mood for a new model.

i only recommend knives that i trust myself to use. other brands may be as good or better....but since i haven't personal experience with them.....i only recommend Spyderco folders.

Oh....i also have a cold steel voyager which is 15 yrs old and still works fine.

I love lockbacks!!:)

As previous posters have mentioned, great knives, excellent value. I EDC an Endura 4 (Spyderco), could not be happier.

Really good ownership/management on Spyderco also. Their Big Enchilada posts here.

I have some EDCs of both brands and I love them, great quality and really an amazing price for what I get. They are not the only ones there are also Emersons, Cold steels, bucks, Gerbers, Kershaws, and MANY more of great quality. Benchmade and Spyderco's main staple is one-hand EDC folders, they have a few fixed-blades and other odds and ends, but the the main thing they have is EDC folders so naturaly they are always mentioned because they each have a huge slection of EDC blades.

Because, for the money, a Spyderco Delica/Endura or a Benchmade Griptilian is hard to beat.

There are other good options, the Boker Trance comes to mind, out there, but Spyderco & Benchmade have a good history going for them.

2 best production houses. great knives under $125. Do you want more $ in your pocket, rattling around with keys and what not?
I like the Spydie Caly III, CF, ZDP-189 or Mini Persian VG-10 or BM 705 in D2.

in addition to what was already mentioned,

they are readily available. every knife shop i have been in carries spyderco and benchmade. most gun shops carry bm and spydies.

excepting the custom knife sites, every one i have visited carries bm and spydie.

To put it simply, no, they're not the only quality makers. They are favorites among this particular community of quality knife lovers. We know our stuff and we like these 2 companies. I wouldn't suggest them if I didn't like them.

I think you'll find that Kershaw is another company that gets frequent mention when the term "EDC" gets thrown out there. They're doing a GREAT job of cranking out high performance, made in the USA knives at very affordable prices!

As far as I'm concerned, Spyderco created the "EDC" genre! Granted, before Sal and crew, you could carry a pocket knife in the bottom of your pocket or in a belt sheath, but you couldn't safely, quickly, and reliably draw it and open it with one hand. Spyderco, by inventing the pocket clip and one hand opening, Spyder-hole, made carrying and using a knife a cinch. As far as I'm concerned, they did more for making the pocket knife much easier and safer to reliably carry and use on a daily basis than anybody in the industry! It's no wonder you hear their name mentioned when an "EDC" question gets asked.;)

P.S. Welcome to the forums!:)

Don't forget most Spyderco's are not made in the US anymore.
For that one reason I steer towards Benchmade, as most of their knives are made in the US, not more than 30 minutes away from me. I do like both companies knives though. Good designs, well thought out.

Well, they are popular (at least with many afficionados).

But, really, how many people have experience with products from the many, many knife companies out there? Note that I include the products of defunct companies that can still be found as well as products from some of the more prodigeous custom makers.

People just generally form opinions on what they have personally handled, which invariable leads to the larger makers, Benchmade andSpyderco and Kershaw and CRK being the more common (as far as single blade lockers go).

Don't forget most Spyderco's are not made in the US anymore. .

Anymore? They make far more now than when they first started; including a Native that is sold in many Walmarts made right here in the good old USA and is likely one of their best sellers. As far as numbers; none of us could know; they may indeed make more overseas; but they make plenty here.

Are the top sellers for Benchmade made here or abroad? Before you answer do you know or are you guesstimating?

I cannot pretend to be an expert...it's a mildly informed guesstimate. Take that for what it's worth.:p

Good companies, like Spyderco, have withstood the test of time. Good companies are consistent and keep improving their product.

I like Benchmade for great designs & the 'fun factor' of the axis lock, Spyderco for unsurpassed reliability
they also have well developped forums and this may be another key issue, for how can one resist the tons of gorgeous pics & reviews posted there??
