Hello all -

I am currently looking for a new EDC blade. Currently I carry black tenacious - love the size and the blade, where it falls short for me is I am reluctant to use it in all conditions...rain, snow, beach, lake, woods, etc.

I have on the way to me a Salt I serrated black, then I went off the cuff and bought a Pacific in straight blade also black...

I have an original Michael Walker - just to small for me to use on some things (I am not one that wants a safe queen), I lost not one but TWO enduras somewhere - I hope they they show back up have not seen them for a couple years...

Where I would like to hear from you - is there one that you would suggest that I should get? SE or PE? I would like to keep it under $100 if I could...should I look outside the Spyderco line to say a *gasp* Emerson?

Just looking for a bit of options that you have experience with...normal task - cutting everything from paracord, rope, boxes, packages open the list goes on and on - it is a tool that is used daily for a wide variety of task...could be in the lake or ocean, could be dry land etc..

Any help is appreciated...

I don't know of the Manix other than seeing it while searching - I have not researched the steel or parts - will it hold up to the elements of being wet etc without rusting or seizing up? This was part of the reason for choosing the salt...I think after reading I chose wrong on the PE though - seems that a lot of guys are saying that with the salt line the SE is the way to go....?

I'm a major advocate of the Stretch. To me it is just about the perfect knife. But for variety I will also add that the Para 2, Manix 2 and Sage 1 or 2 are also wonderful edc options. The Stretch and Manix fall below your budget marker. With some shopping on the exchange you could find a Para 2 or Sage 1 below that. If you strike it real lucky you could find a Sage 2 right above your budget.

I doubt you are going to have rust or seizing up on any stainless steel knife, unless you are in salt water and never take care of it.

Thank you for the replies thus far - I have been watching the exchange for sure - and I did consider the Para 2 - and a Sage 2 - then again the carbon lover in me thought let's bump the budget and find something with carbon - I talk myself in circles....

Manix 2 in S110V would cover your corrosion resistance. It isn't H1, but it is very stainless. Also, what you have heard is true, H1 (aka the Salt series blade steel) is better in SE.

The Sage 1 will cure that CF itch and brand new is between $90-$110

with your budget line! the stretch FRN/VG10 would be a good pick, and the sage 1 are both grate EDC'er's,i have both these and carry ether all the time, vary good bang for the buck to,PS.i'm a sucker for carbon fiber also!good luck with your pick.

Can the clip on the sage 1 CF be swapped out? I much prefer the solid clip like the tenacious, salt, etc.

No its wire clip only. But in my experience with mine they are very durable and just take some getting used to. You would have to move up into some of the higher end stuff to find carbon fiber and an hourglass clip

Hmmmm - maybe I'll look for a carbon model that also has the solid clip - and if titanium (clip) I'll do kart wheels...

I think my budget just went up :-)

And def sending back the PE pacific in exchange for the SE...

Appreciate all the comments so far. Good group here.

Would an Emerson CQC-7 get consideration by anyone?

I have considered Emerson but with the materials and features Spyderco uses and features I have stuck to them exclusively. ZT on the other hand makes some excellent knives with good materials for similar prices

I've definitely gawked at a few ZT's - I always seem to come back to Spyders...even the tenacious has proved to be an outstanding bang for the buck.

Don't be so worried about where you use your Tenacious! Pull that thing out and use it mercilessly and enjoy it!

The PM2 and S110V Manix are both awesome offers from Spyderco. I own and love them both for these reasons:

PM2:
-Excellent ergonomics/feel in my hand.
-Compression lock.
-Blade shape and materials.

Manix S110V:
-One of the best values in modern folders.
-Size defying weight.
-S110V steel does so many things well.

Note taken! Will continue to carry it and use it along side of the Salt I just picked up.

The PM2 is on the hit list as is the Manix! I got the Pacific Salt in last night in PE - and fell in love instantly! I know a lot of people only get it or would consider it in SE but I really like it so far. I have the Salt I coming is black/SE - so I think the two are a good compliment to each other.

When I opened the box I instantly thought of my beloved Enduras that I miss. It's like an Endura that won't rust. It's in my pocket right now - the only thing I've cut today was a piece of paper to test the blade edge from factory.

I guess I need to learn to sharpen my own blades now. I can see this one getting a lot of use.

People looking for a basic everyday knife often jump into the higher priced model Spydercos and overlook the basic models. Given the price to performance ratio and the fact that you can use them hard and not worry about scratching the finish of an over $100 knife, I always recommend something from the core line up as a daily user. Those being the Dragonfly, Delica, Stretch and Endura. Any of those four knives (within their size limitations) will do 99.999% of what the normal knife user will need done. You can do a lot worse than any of those within the size range you need. Everything else is gravy.

My vg10 Delicate is still my most carried edc folder, and I have a lot to choose from. I do switch it up on occasion, but when I just grab and go, it's usually the delica that finds its way into my pocket.

Hi Brvheart, haven't seen you around here so welcome. Here are a couple of random answers to some of your questions.

-first of all, excellent move exchanging the pe Pacific Salt for its se counterpart. SE H1 is some really special steel. PE H1 is....meh. The salt knives in general are my favorite spyderco offerings. They are basically 100% rustproof delicas and enduras. If you use your knives you will be very happy with those.

-As far as another knife, I like the Manix s110v option that someone else mentioned. S110v is very corrosion resistant, and with no liners, there isn't much else to rust in the knife. The steel used in the lock should also be very stainless.

-One other thing though is that since you already have the salts you might look at some of the less stainless options. There is an m4 pm2 on the horizon as well as a Military in 52100!! We live in interesting times. ;)
