so thank you all for the replies -

Surfingringo - thank you for the welcome :-)

Sorry for the confusion - I ended up keeping the pacific salt in PE and also bought a Salt I in SE.

I am open to the options mentioned from Surf as well as the others :)

What I did for now is bought the sharp maker to begin the journey of sharpening myself and not paying someone to do them for me.

I still want something with CF and also love titanium - so boy oh boy - why do I need to buy so many knives again :-D

+1 on the Manix 2 is s110v. They pop up all the time in the exchange for under $100. It's almost unbelievable how light it is. I have huge hands and the knife is plenty big and only weighs 3 ounces. Incredible.

Learn how to use the Sharpmaker effectively and it might be all you ever need. It has been my only sharpening "system" for over 25 years.

Same here! Although the only thing I would add is that a strop loaded with a couple of compounds does wonders. Highly recommended.

Also, OP, I admire your ability to spend money of knife maintenance stuff instead of just more knives. That is a conflict that I have a lot of trouble overcoming...

The Salt I one arrives today, the darn SM came on Sunday! I am trying to learn - watched the DVD - I have an older SOG partially serrated blade that I'm going to practice on :-)

The Manix 2 - I keep looking for one to pop up - it interest me :-) along with 59 others :-)

Great call on the SM too. You will get countless hours of enjoyment and use out of that tool. It will see more use than any particular knife you purchase. I'd suggest doing a bit of reading on the maintenance and tinkering forum here and watching a few youtube videos. It's definitely not rocket science but it takes a bit of practice to start getting razor sharp edges. Mainly you just have to have a clear understanding of your objective and how to get there. I would also highly recommend that you go ahead and purchase the diamond rods for the sharpmaker. They are an essential piece in making the SM a complete system. Have fun!

Thanks Surf! I will check out the Diamond rods for sure. I have watched the Spyderco DVD a couple times - seems straight forward, right up until the time I go get mine out and setup - then my CDO (that's OCD in the proper order) mind gets freaked out about ruining my knife and I put it back away....

on a side note - the Salt I arrived today - BOY DO I LOVE THAT THING! I think the Pacific Plain edge and the Salt I Spyder Edge compliment each other quite nicely - really loving both blades so far - I can't make up my mind which one to carry tomorrow so I guess I will carry them both :-D

Going to go browse the tinkering forum for a bit and see what I can learn there :)
