EDC Budget Folder

Take a look at the Byrd knives. Imported by Syderco, they are a heck of a knife for 25.00 or so. I also love the Kershaw Blackout.

I have all the knives you mentioned and most of the ones everyone else has too. If you can only get one, my vote is for the flash II.

I'd go with the Kershaw. I like them and they hold up. And the assisted opening and safety to keep it closed are both bonuses. Plus a great warranty, and free sharpening forever. If you want to go for a bit more, look at some of the Cold Steel folders. They come in many flavors, and are usually pretty solid knives for the money.

Just my opinion, but assisted opening is an unnecessary addition to most knives. So what if your knife is open in .3 seconds and my regular one handed opening knife is open in .6 seconds. For all practical (or tactical) purposes there is no difference. If you like the design or the ergonomics of the AO, want a "neater" knife and don't care to pay the additional cost, fine, but it really doesn't add anything in functionality (again just my opinion). There are plenty of good knives for your $40 and under budget. The Spyderco Native has been mentioned ( a little small to fit my hand), CRKT EDC ( I carry a FD12with AUS8 steel & a Tanto point as a work knife that was less than $20 and it works great. Byrds are well worth the money but admittedly without the best ergonomics. Kershaw makes several great knives in your price range. My whole point is you can get a knife that will last and that you will be very pleased with, without going outside your original budget as so many posts seem to encourage. I have not seen the Ka-bar Doziers folders mentioned and they are also best buy knives.

Good luck with your choice,

I couldn't agree anymore about the need for assisted openers and/or waved knives. I used to be real big on the wave "hype" but found out recently that I'm happy just having a clip and a thumbstud on my knives. It's damn near impossible to pull a waved knife out of your pocket when sitting down or crouched on one knee.

Back to the OP, a kershaw storm I or kershaw storm II at wally world will do just about anything that you could want from a knife for $30.00 usd.

And the Storm is assisted opening! ;)

I'm looking to buy a decent folder for edc. Id like to keep it under 40 dollars but might be willing to pay a bit more if really needed. It must be one hand opening and i'm looking at some assisted models(but that's not necessary). Blade length should be around 3-3.75 inches. Any help if greatly appreciated :D

Some of the knives I've been looking at so far:
Kershaw leek
Byrd Raven
CRKT m16 edc
Sog flash II
Spyderco Delica

There are a lot of good knives available with the parameters you have listed. Of the knives you have listed as candidates, my personal favorite is the Delica. Very thin in the pocket. Good ergos in the hand. Excellent steel in the blade. But it does run about $50 + shipping (say $56 to get it in your hand.)

As far as knives outside your list, my favorite knife below $40 is the Benchmade Monochrome. A framelock, with N690 alloy blade. I find that the performance of N690 is close to that of VG10. The knife is very thin in the pocket. It has a very useful blade shape. Runs about $33 online. With shipping you should be able to get one for below $40.

Those all seem like fine knives, as well as most of the others that have been mentioned. I would like to submit one additional knife for your consideration, the AG Russell FeatherLite. Interesting and strong lock. Very easy one-hand opening. Very slender and lightweight, perfect for pocket carry. Available in two blade steels, two blade shapes, and with or without neck sheath. Prices start at $35.

+1 on the Ka-bar Doziers. Got a couple of them and they are well worth the low price they sell for. Slim, light, beefy blade, very well made, and takes a nice edge.

Honestly? Get a $10 on-sale Smith & Wesson. It's got 440C stainless, decent mechanics and ergonomics.

Then take your girlfriend out for a bite with the money you've got left over.

You'll be a happy man.

Here is another vote for the Ka-bar Dozier line. The larger folding hunter line is a real hand filling piece. They can be had for around $30.00 and with thumb stud or hole for one hand opening. The smaller line is very carry friendly, and are around $20.00 Check them out. There are so many options in this area and price point, that you will have a lot of fun choosing.

Ka-Bar K2 line. The knife below has become the knife I use more than any other knife. At $19 I will use it for everything and if I lose it, it's no big deal. I've lost probably $800 worth of knives over the years.

With G-10 handles, decent steel, phenomenal ergos and a solid liner lock.......it is tough to beat.

Spyderco Byrd line or Tenacious.
Boker Hyper or M Type.
And if you can still get the Mcusta made Browning Ice Storm mentioned above for that price, I'd jump on it. I have 2, and they're quality knives, so long as you dont mind aluminum handles.
